My Windows 2000 Professional home machine every now and again goes to sleep .. the screen goes into power save, and it nevers wakes up for any mouse movement or keyboard presses.

Only way to get back in is to press the RESET button.

I've searched MS and used other search engines but can't find anything that helps.

Does anyone have any ideas, seen it before? Any ideas how to fix it?

You say it sleeps "every now and again" which sounds as if you don't have sleep settings active. Is that the situation?

    happens when logged in

The word "sleep" was used very loosely ... to clarify -

We have accounts active on our computer , i.e. one needs to log in to use it. Means the kids can't install s/w but "I" can(!). Never seems to go to "sleep" when not logged on (itr is also being a proxy for other machines to browse the net).

The problem occurs when there's been no activity for a while.
i.e. when a screen saver should/could cut in. Or maybe (says he thinking aloud) it's the powersave setting on the monitor side?

I just checked and found that monitor powersave cuts in after 30 mins, so have changed this to NEVER to see if it makes a difference. Could this be a possible cause & cure?

Turning off powersave seems the cure

Since turning powersave off in W2K for the monitor, the prpoblem hasn't occurred.

So if anyone else meets this, give it a try.

    Thanks for prompt Newt :D
