Hi, I've had a problem with my computer where the cpu speed varies. And I can't seem to find out what it is. I've been using computers since I was little but I still can't seem to find out anything about this problem, because it's in such a general area, because there are so many things that can affect the CPU speed, viruses, spyware, physical problems and what not, but I hope I can find out by giving everybody all the evidence I have. Btw I use this computer strictly for gaming and I will give you all specs too.

So heres the problems , the cpu usage percentage sometimes goes up to about 68 to 100 percent during the use of some programs. One program is Utorrent, but it also happens with other programs, my computer should be able to easily handle programs like that with minimum cpu usage. Well, It could before anyway. Heres some more evidence, Win I use winamp and am playing a song, maybe I'll load up a program and the music begins to stutter a little and become very slow during the initial process load. It never did this before. Anyways , thats pretty much the problems I experience and help would be greatfully appreciated, I also use Spybot-Search and destroy, ad-aware, spyware blaster, avira anti virus, and startup mechanic, Here are some specs from hijack this and from sisoft.

I hope you guys can help...

Hello c0mpkid626 and welcome to the Board :)

If there isn't a hardware with the MOBO itself:

    Test memory http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

And to see if its software conflicts - corruption, the only procedure I can think of to troubleshoot this to start with minimum apps running (mainly security) and then add apps - could be also one the app drivers.

I didn't see any malicious processes running in the HJT log - orthers will look also.

    Regards - Charles

Another thing guys, this problem is off and on, Like right now , it's fine with all the programs that it's usually slow with, and this is how I always want it to run, but it has it's good days and it's bad days.Earlier today, it was slow, I did a couple restarts, and after that, it was fine, But I know it will become slow again , I just dont know why.I have a feeling it might be a physical problem, I don't know if my graphics card has anything to do with it but i bought an x1900 about 8 months ago and I was wondering if the graphics card could have anything to do with it, btw this computer wasn't bought at a comp store , I had it assembled by a proffessional, but anyways, these problems are really getting on my nerves and I need to be able to edit my videos, lol.

    thanks guys,
    Chris

The most likely source of variable processor use would be this one:
    C:\Program Files\uTorrent\utorrent.exe

Disable this from autostarting, and run your computer for at least a week to see if you notice a difference.

The demands of this program are not constant; it depends on how many others you are serving files to at any point in time.

Well, I don't think this is the problem because auto start with Utorrent has been disabled already, and Im using it right now downloading about 8 different things and my comp is workin fine right now, which is really weird, because it has good days and bad days, and also , I was wondering if there was a possibility that it could be a defective graphics card. Or maybe the motherboard, Because I know if it was software , It would most likely start up bad every time. Can the motherboard limit cpu speeds due to heat?

Open the case and make sure the all the fans are working and clean the inside out with compressed air.

    Board temp 96.8 F
    CPU temp 127.4 F
    Power/Aux temp 98.6 F

Also, Inside of computer nice and clean, will buy a compressed air kit anyway, The thing is there is no problem now,but like I said, it will come back, and I just downloaded a new bios update, that might work, who knows?

Your earlier Sandra log showed a CPU temp of 150 degrees F, which exceeds the Maximum rating set by Intel of 147 degrees F.

When this happens, the processor reduces voltage and operates at a lower speed. This Thermal Control process, TCC, begins cutting the processor back well before the Maximum is reached. This has an important consequence:

    http://download.intel.com/design/Pentiumd/datashts/30750603.pdf

As for bittorrent, do not think only of your downloads. Even with nothing in your download queue you are serving uploads to others. This traffic is variable, and essentially out of your control.

Yea, I know about the uploads, but anyways, I hope the tcc is the route of the problem because that would be easy to solve, I did buy a custom fan for it but apparently thats not enough because the graphics card has a lot of heat, But some anti evidence for this would be that I opened the case up for the computer and stuck a somewhat large fan to really airate it out while the computer was running, I left it there for about 20 minutes, but the problem was still there, Idk if u have to restart it to get it back to normal once the TCC kicks in, but anyways, its very easy to tell when this problem is actually happening because the mouse movement is very laggy when this occurs. When the mouse is smooth, I know everythings ok.

It is not a case fan at issue. Or a large fan blowing over everything.

The processor is being inadequately cooled. Your Sandra results are unambiguos in this regard.

There is a a reasonable chance as well that it has been damaged from this excessive heat.

Yes, I assumed that might be the case, although I hope it's not, but if it's at that temp, whats the solution? It probably only gets to that temp when I play games on the computer, probably due to the heat of the graphics card which uses most of the power in the system.

Improve the processor heatskink and fan assembly.
    Add a larger power supply.

    Do not overclock the processor.
    Do not overclock your RAM.

Sounds like a plan, thanks for your help Bill, I'll keep up with the posting and let you guys know if it happens again, I'll also get the temp the next time it happens , but hopefully and luckily, thanks to all of you , This case just might be closed.

    With great thanks,
    Chris

There are several CPU temperature monitor utilities available as freeware. I use Motherboard Monitor, but there are other choices: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=311

In looking for one, be sure it allows you to set some threshold temperatures for notification or alarm. Some logging would be a nice too.

Apparently, My board (D915GAV) is not supported by motherboard monitor, are there any other good programs that it might be supported by?

It is not the motherboard, per se. Your Intel processor supports the Intel SMBUS, and the temperatures should be reporting on that buss. Usually you can fiddle things to get Motherboard Monitor to work. See their Forum.

In the alternative, consider SpeedFan: http://www.almico.com/sfhistory.php

In almost every case this will not be a plug-and-play deal, some fiddling/experimenting will be needed.

A Google search on "cpu temperature monitoring" will give you other choices.

Hey, I put some new fans and cooling things in it and I can keep the temp under 50 C but the big problem is its still slow occasionally, could this be from any possible damage?

I think this was asked and answered as the attorneys say, although I do not think you liked the answer.

Your download load is something you can control. Your upload service as a torrrent you cannot. Your issue exactly matches running this application at startup:

    C:\Program Files\uTorrent\utorrent.exe

yes, but when its not on, I still have a slow cpu occasionally, when im editing videos and what not, so utorrent isnot a factor because the problem occurs when the program is off,nd i removed it from startup

I took it to a microcenter and they analyzed it hardware and softwarewise, they couldnt find anything wrong with it, im just confused, it still has its problem , i think its the graphics card
