Symantec unless configured not to will always do a floppy drive acess at startup and shutdown.

The other common reason for the access is that you have an MRU "Most Recently Used" entry with a reference to the floppy. These eventually age-out, but while there will cause a floppy access. Windows keeps MRU lists in several places. Look in your Office Applications, for example.

You can in the alternative download a free utility to clear your MRU listings: http://windowsxp.mvps.org/mrublaster.htm

Here are the reference you can remove. I was mistaken on the Qtask must have been someone else that I saw this.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [TkBellExe] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Real\Update_OB\realsched.exe" -osboot

O23 - Service: AOL Connectivity Service (AOL ACS) - Unknown owner - C:\PROGRA~1\COMMON~1\AOL\ACS\AOLacsd.exe (file missing)

Jim is quite correct in his accessment of it possibly being a temp causing this problem, that is why in my last post I recommended that you do some cleanup.

As for Norton doing it I agree likely not Norton.

    SO!

Do some cleanup. Download install and run these:

    Best free cleaners:

    DCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/DCleaner_d4790.html

    ATF-Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/

CCleaner get the slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx

    EasyCleaner http://personal.inet.fi/business/toniarts/files/EClea2_0.exe

Dcleaner and ATFClean are purely disk cleaners. CClean also has a registry cleaner (issues), run this also as many times as it takes to come up clean.

EasyClean does it all but stay away from Duplicate file cleaning (especially Windows OS files) unless you are sure of what you are doing.

Do these reboot get back to us.

    Mflynn, Bill and Temerc

Thanks for everyones help! I have removed the entries suggested by mflynn but the aol one won't remove with HJT. Also ran MRU cleaner, Atf cleaner and ccleaner all successfull. Dcleaner gave me an error and then Dr. Watsons Post Mortem error. A: drive still being accessed well after destop icons appear on windows screen and just prior to norton anti-virus icon in toolbar and on shutdown when windows screen says Windows shutting down. I have re-booted and here is my new log. Also any idea why a new folder c:\programfiles\TOD 012006 has appeared since i cleared it a few threads ago (the numbers 012... are different then what i cleared)

    Hi Tino

This is Spyware.UserLogger. Normal virus scan should get this.

    Update your Virus scanner.

Download and install the following file http://fileforum.betanews.com/detail...r/1035382760/1

    Boot to safe mode.

Browse to program files\tod 01062006 (the number is the date that is why it changed from yesterday) and delete the \tod 01062006 (or what ever folder) folder.

What is your Virus scanner? But run it now!

    In Regseeker

    select find in registry

    search for
    UsrLog.exe run

    then search again for
    User Logger_is1

    delete both of these

    then again in regseeker
    select
    Clean registry

    delete all found.

reboot and recheck for the folder

    report back

    Mike

I reboot in safe mode, deleted TOD, ran Norton Antivirus (nothing found), did regseek for UsrLog.exe run and User Logger_is1 (nothing found), did registry clean. Rebooted no TOD folder found and here is the new HJT Log.Also the a: drive wasn't accessed when shuting down in safe mode but its still accessing as before.

Did you do all the cleaners in safe mode from post 22? Perhaps try again the dclean should run.

Additionally download this and run it in Safe mode.

The stand alone Mcafee virus cleaner

    Q. Since installing Norton AntiVirus, every time I shut down or restart my computer my floppy drive is accessed. Why is this happening?

One of the options in Norton AntiVirus, and the majority or other antivirus products, is to scan floppies on reboot. The option is enabled by default. This is to prevent booting the computer with an infected floppy disk since this is a common way that computers are infected with boot sector viruses.

If you wish to turn this option off, you should double-click on the Norton Autoprotect icon in the systray (the area next to the clock on the Task Bar), then click the Options button. On the Autoprotect tab, click on the Advanced button and then click on the option "Check floppies when rebooting the computer" to clear the check box. Click on the OK button and click on the OK button again on the Autoprotect page.

This automatic check is done when Autoprotect is initialized. Autoprotect is intialized prior to running the tray icon application.

Yes Mcafee got some. Not suprising you still have Viri, so let us shoot something else at it.

Download Sophos Virus cleaner install but do not run:
    http://www.sophos.com/tools/sav32sfx.exe

Download AOL Cleaner do not run
    http://www.mrtech.com/news/messages/4617.html

    Empty your Recycle BIN.

In safe mode just to be sure

    Browse and delete this

    C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\Online Security Guide.url ... Found potentially unwanted program Adware-Url.gen.

    Then this
C:\Program Files\MyWaySA\SrchAsDe\deSrcAs.dll ... Found potentially unwanted program MySearch.

The others are OK false positves and baddies found earlier in Quarintine. These we should delete later.

Remove the AOL by search (set advanced options it included Hidden, System and Read only files) delete them. Once they are deleted you should be able to remove them from HJT if they are still there.

    Then run AOL Cleaner

    and

    Sophos

Erased the files you asked. Ran AOL cleaner and sophos. Sophos found mal/packer virus in c:\doc and settings\NAV 2005\Norton crack\TMG-NAV2k5.exe

Now on reboot i get an error - Norton Anti-Virus 2005 does not support the repair feature please un-install and re-install ?

The a: drive is still being accessed even in safe mode on start up (if that helps) . Shut down is ok.

Here is a new HJT log.

    Opps!

    That explains a lot!

Posting Rule 10: Other Illegal Activities * - As you might expect, we don't want anything illegal going on here. Users cannot post hacks, cracks, pirated software, registration keys, or anything of the like.

That (tmg nav2k5) happens to be a crack/keygen for Norton 2005.

Illustrates directly what happens when you use P2P downloading. Since the crack itself was infected now the entire Norton suite is suspect. It could have been disabled even though it seemed to be working.

Because of the Rule Violation I will have to wait for Admin or the moderator to give me the OK to continue and help you remove this and become legal!

If they permit I will guide you thru removing Norton. Until then you are on your own!

    Tino,
as Mike pointed out, according to rule #10 we don't assist in any illegal activities. As it is obvious that you are running a cracked Norton and that it is likely the source of your trouble, I will close this thread. If the Administrator is of a different opinion, he will reopen the thread an give Mike "green lights" to continue.

After a discussion among the staff and administrator, we have decided to reopen the thread. The reason is that Tino has given an explanation which we believe in.

    Sorry

    My explanation is this:

Approximately one month ago I brought my computer to a computer expert to fix the problem of the vmmdiag32.exe error that I was getting on start up. This person proceeded to tell me that he removed a numerous amount of viri, adware....etc. and that the anti-virus program that I was using (through my internet provider paying monthly) was garbage as it was allowing even simple viri through. So long story short he installed Norton for me and said it was far more superior than my present one and good for one year and I would have to renew it after that if I chose to. I paid him for these services only to still have the error (that he said something was changed by a virus and just ignore it as it will cause no harn to my computer otherwise we would have to wipe the drive clean and start over). I had no idea it was a cracked version as I paid for his services. I apologize to everyone on this website including admin., staff and viewers. I only posted the results so I can get my computer running properly and I meant no disrespect to this website.

    Thanks Tino

Good! Thanks Arie and Christer for taking the time to consider this.

    OK Tino

You have done a lot of work there is more to do. The only thing I can tell you is that you now have the conrtol and no longer need the so called computer expert.

I know a little but there many experts on this BBS that will help us.

You will learn more by doing this yourself.

I think you will agree that you have learned a lot by following the instructions here already. Soon you will be ready to do most of this for yourself.

You have been excellent at following instructions and asking if you were not sure so keep up the good work.

What we are going to do is completly remove Norton and go back with the free AVG.

So to save time go to this link, print it out study it and do the steps carefully

    http://windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=61013

Do not post there (that is someone elses post) return here to this thread to continue. Notice that I forgot a step in the main post of cleaning Norton and it is in a seperate short post, and has a step to be done first. Some of these things you have done before or are similar to some of the things you have done earlier.

All the downloads and instructions are there to clean Norton. It will probaly fix your last issue just by doing this procedure even before we install AVG.

Get back to me when you are ready for AVG and we will help with that.

    Good Luck,

    Mike

As you can see after reading the other post you already have some of the downloads so you do not need to download them again.

BUT! I do want you to run them again exactly in the order presented.

I did not understand your last PM. What do you mean simple add/remove???

The only 2 posts on the Shammie that you need to follow are the last 2, #6 and #7.

The top will explain why but do posts 6 and 7.

As you will see #7 is the one I forgot. It shoud be done after all other 6 steps are done right after this:

    OK?

    Mike
