I have 2 Dell computer optiplex 733Mhz with 500meg of ram and both run windows 2000. One of them I bought new and came with a PCI videocard with 32 meg of ram. The other was a refurbished computer and came with a 8meg videocard which I replaced with an ATI 7000 PCI with 64 meg ram.

    1. windows 2000 showed an update driver for the ATI card, I tried it but it did not work. What could be the problem here?

    2. I tried to move the ATI to the then new computer, but it could not be installed. What could be the problem here?

    additional problem!

After 2 years absent from the internet, I just renewed dsl with verizon. As a result, my internet update is rusty. So when I saw an update for my ATI radeon 7000 on windows 2000 update, I grasp it right away. It installed well and works well with IE except that my game Gothic 2 refuses to run ( it says something about unsupported D3D...). Anyway, I remember now that the same thing had hppened a few years back and I had had to reinstalled its driver.

NOw I tried to download the ati radeon 7000 but it said that unauthorized download. Anybody has an idea?

--> I tried IE many times but I still got the unauthorized page. I read thru all the probable causes w/o any hint. However, when I switched to firefox, IT WORKED!!!

    Greeneye,
I would advise against getting drivers from the Windows Update website (...if this is what you mean by Windows 2000 update).

The ATI graphics card may have an ATI GPU (chipset), but was it manufactured by ATI or one of the other graphics card (OEM) manufacturers? I would go to the card manufacturer's website, look up the model and use the drivers that are supplied there. The card will have the model number printed on it and probably the manufacturer's name. If it was actually manufactured by ATI, use the (Catalyst) drivers from their website.

You will need to uninstall the old drivers and software before changing the adapter, otherwise you will probably find the drivers "clash ".

If you start finding problems (which it seems you are), boot into Safe Mode, go to Add/Remove Programs and uninstall any programs related to the graphics (currently installed or the original Dell graphics drivers). When you boot into normal Windows and the Add New Hardware wizard runs, click Cancel, then run the new drivers installation program when you are at the desktop.

With graphics drivers you need to uninstall all the old software and drivers before you install a new/different card.

    ati driver update

If I uninstall all the graphics drivers, am I still able to boot into windows?

I downloaded the catalyst driver suite from the amd.ati domain 6-2_xp-2k_dd_wdm_enu_30152.exe for radeon 7000. The install instruction is for a new videocard but I use the same card and I can't find intructions for it. Do I still have to remove the old driver before install the update driver?

I remember a couple of years ago, I had the same problem with win2k update and had to reinstall radeon 7000 driver. I had to play around with the video outputs and eventually it worked and I still don't understand what is the right way to do it.

    ati driver problem (continued)

I updated with the new software I downloaded from the amd.ati site following the update instructions( which is pretty tricky to find ). I still got the same error when I tried to run Gothic 2:

    "X: XD3D_InitPerDX: can't create D3DX context! Error: DDERR_UNSUPPORTED "

I don't understand it since with the same videocard I had run gothic 2 hundred of times with no problem.

    ati driver problem(continued)

I searched the netfor the error message posted in my previous post and I found 2 solutions from a reliable source ( I think):

    1. set the screen resolutions in the file gothic.ini to the same as the screen resolution.

    2. downgrade the driver to a lower version ( catalyst 4.1, 4.7 or 5.3 ).

The tried the first solution, it did not work. The second solution seems promising but the problem is the official site amd.ati only carries catalyst versions 6.1, 6.2 for this radeon 7000. Can somebody tell me where I can find those old drivers?

    Yes
Clicking Cancel will make Windows load standard graphics drivers.
Yes, I think your problems stem from a clash of new and old drivers. You should try to remove all the old drivers (in Safe Mode) before installing new ones.

You can try installing an old version of the drivers, but ATI seem quite confident that the new version/s should work. Finding an old version...as I said, if the card happens to be manufactured by a third party (OEM) manufacturer and not ATI, you may find the perfect version of the drivers for download at their website.

I don't think it will be relevant, but check the version of DirectX. Go to Start -> Run and enter dxdiag. There you will find the version on the first tab and some simple tests on the Display tab, but they will probably say that Direct Draw is not functioning.

    re: ati drivers update problem

I ran dxdiag and tests but all the tests are fine. I also found a link which carries a lot of older ati radeon 7000 drivers, its site asks for membership. I think I should post it here just in case somebody wants to know:

    http://driveragent.com/results.php?t=7066108&p=0&PHPSESSID=de019ee92219d675f3a5639ab6f3be1e

I also did find the instructions to update( although tricky to find it ) the radeon 7000 from the ati.amd site and as I posted in one of my previous messages I still have problem with running gothic 2.

In anycase, I will keep working on this problem. I still have the CDs from the original radeon 7000. Thanks for all the suggestions.

You should be able to get just about every ATI graphics driver known to man at www.guru3d.com but now that AMD has taken over ATI, some of the links to older drivers were broken.

I just had to keep trying different ones until I got one to download. I wanted an older driver for my new 9600Pro.

    Error: DDERR_UNSUPPORTED solved!

Thanks for the great link, Gary. I also found a good link at may help in some cases:

    http://display-and-video.free-driver-download.com/ati technology.html

My search for a suitable radeon driver to work with Gothic has result. I found the catalyst 4.1 for xp/2000 from the above link. I installed it and now my Gothic comes back to life. :)

I have tested w/o success with the following versions: catalyst 4.10, 5.8, 5.11, 5.13 and 6.1. The driver in my original CD also got problem, it says that it is incompatible with the onboard adapter which is an intel.
