    I have two units, one connected to my router and one wireless in the basement. I would like to transfer my data to the new unit in the basment, but can't map to it. Both units have sharing enabled and shared and the McAfee firewall is tunred off. I receive a message that reads cannot connect to server\share.

    I'm thinking of running a 50 ft. cable to the basement, but that is a last resort. There must be a reason why I can't connect.

    Forget your 50' cable plans. There is no reason that wired-to-wireless is the issue involved in your difficulties.

    From the machine you want to use to access a remote share:

    Start, Run, cmd
    netsh diag gui
    Enable all options.

    Please report back only the FAILED entries including the first four lines above and below any entry in the log.

    Your wireless adapter is not making a connection to the wireless router.
    So lets focus on that. For the Wireless adapter:
    • Disable any special D-Link "Turbo" or other acceration features;
    • Remove for the moment any security settings -- WEP, WPA, .etc.
    • Disable anything like 'Enable 802.1x' authentication;
    • Disable any setting that mentions 'Bluetooth';
    • Make sure the adapter is set to 'Infrastructure' rather than 'Ad-hoc';
    • Make sure the SSID setting matches exactly in Case and spelling that which is set on the router for the same setting; match these exactly for case and spelling.
    • If you have a choice, choose whatever looks like 'Let Windows XP handle the connection'
    • Start, Run, services.msc
      Check to be sure that the Windows Wireless Zero Configuration Service' is running and set to 'Automatic' as its startup type.

    Reboot and run the diagnostic test again, and report back.

    I followed the procedures, but to no avail. Still can't map. When I issue the IPCONFIG /all command, the wireless computer is being assigned an IP address and can see router and Comcasts DNS servers. Internet access is fine.

    I'll fiddle again tonight after work.

    On all computers:

    Control Panel, Security Center, Firewall settings
    Click Exceptions.
    Is a checkmarked exception made on all computers for File and Printer sharing? It must be.

    If using a different firewall other than the native XP firewall please advise.

    Note: In a Forum, there is no need to quote the previous post contents. People on dial-up would sincerely appreciate it if you do not do so. I know this is good citizenship in an NNTP newsgroup, but it honestly is not need on web-based Forums.

    Best.

    File and Printer sharing is checked on both units and I'm using McAfee firewall, but it's currently disabled. If I issue the tracert command from the wireless unit, where should the route go? When I tracert from the computer that is connected to the router the route goes to the wired computer and when I tracert the wireless computer, it routes to the wireless computer. Is this correct?

    When I enter the router setup, the IP range starts at 192.168.1.100. Wired unit is 192.168.1.101 and wireless is 192.168.1.102 and router 192.168.1.1.

    When I issued the netsh diag gui command, the wireless card failed. Why is it pinging 192.168.0.1?

    It is pinging 192.168.0.1 because there is another wireless router nearby.
    At times your wireless adapter is connecting to another network. That is why the netsh diag gui would not work either. See from the earlier results:

    [00000008] D-Link AirPlus G DWL-G510 Wireless PCI Adapter(rev.B) (FAILED)
    DHCPServer = 192.168.0.1 (FAILED)
    Pinging 192.168.0.1 with 32 bytes of data:
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Request timed out.
    Ping statistics for 192.168.0.1:
    Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 0, Lost = 4 (100% loss)

    That connection information is coming from another router, that is secure, and your adapter keeps trying to connect to it.

    Open the properties sheet for the Wireless Network Connection, and click the Wireless Networking tab. Click the Advanced button. In the top panel, select the middle radio button "Access points only" or something similar. Uncheck the lower box to access any wireless network. Click OK. Then make sure in the lower panel of identified wireless networks, your router is listed first (you can move entries up and down). Delete all other entries.

    No good. With Access points only checked, I'm going to run the Netsh Diag GUI and then check the adapter. Same results, the adapter failed.

    I downloaded the patch and still was unable to map. My brother-in-law stopped by over the weekend and suggested a thumb drive, I could have did that a week ago. I'm not interested in taking the easy way out, just want to get it right. I appreciate the time and effort afforded to me.

    Start, Network Connections.
    Right click the existing Wireless Connection entry and delete it.
    Reboot.

    There is something wrong in that entry. It should not be looking for 192.168.0.1 as a DHCP server or Gateway.

    XP will build a brand new entry, and lets go forward on that basis.

    The delete option is greyed out and can't be deleted. Just thought I'd add the ipconfig data from the wireless unit.
