I mostly use IE, but I also have Mozilla and a few other backup browsers.

If for whatever reason I wanted to
    RAZE TO THE GROUND
    and REINSTALL
    Internet Explorer

    - How would I do it without incapacitating Windows?

    - How would I find an installer for IE 5.5, considering that due to my pigheaded narrowmindedness I find IE 6 a vastly inferior product?

I think I can get it from some old magazine CD's, I am not sure you can do it properly through a Windows installation CD, but I think there must be an online way...

Filippo--Did you install IE6 over an older version? If so, and you did not delete the older version's files, you should be able to revert to the older version by going to Control Panel|Add/Remove Programs|scroll to Microsoft Internet Explorer|highlight|click Add/Remove. One of the choices offered is "Restore the previous Windows configuration ". Check it and click OK. You should be back at the old version. (You may have to redo all SP's and patches.)
    See http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;q293907
If that "Restore previous...." check box is not available, sounds like you do not have the previous version still on the PC.
In that case you might consider first downloading an older version from
    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/IE/
Follow the instructions here to save to disc, so you can install after you have uninstalled IE6.

Unless you are running an OS that shipped with IE6 (like XP) in which case you can't do what you want without destroying your system as far as I know.
