I bought a used machine with a 10 gig HD and Win Me, plus a number of programs. I want to install a new 40 gig HD I plan to buy Win XP full then clean install the OS on the 40 gig then move ONLY the programs not the ME OS from the old 10 gig to the new 40 gig HD. I have a copy?? of the Win ME install disk?? (not sure of its legality) but do not want to ghost from the 10 to 40 then UG. Is there a program that will move the non-OS programs between the HD's since I don't have all the original install disks?

    Thank you

No, it is not possible to move programs from one OS to another, not even if they are the same (XP > XP as opposed to ME > XP). There are many program files integrated in the OS and even if you could find them all, they would be the wrong version for XP. Then there is the registry ...

A tricky question. I usually never recommend upgrading, especially from ME which was reputed for instability. Some people will say "bull****" to this and that the upgrade to XP completely replaces ME. In this situation with a few "non-existing" installation disks, it might be worth a try.

Which version of Ghost are we talking about? I can give advice for Ghost 2003 but nothing else. Do make a general cleanup (temp-folders, cookies, history, Temporary Internet Files, etc) and defragmentation prior to cloning.

Prior to cloning, do not start Windows with the new HDD connected (may/will give problems with the clone and drive letters).

After cloning, shut down without letting Ghost restart the computer. Remove the 10GB HDD and connect the 40GB HDD in its place. Make sure that the jumper setting is the same on the clone as on the original.

If cloning was successful, upgrade to XP.

Thank you I will clean everything up and try that. If it don't work then I can always clean install w/format on the 40 gig and format the 10 as a spare or whatever. If I lose some programs so be it. End of thread
