my computer uses windows 98. can i safely remove quicken 99, microsoft works, money and word as i dont use these programs. i have the add and remove feature and also the uninstall feature but i want to ask first before i do it. these programs came with the computer and are of no use to me. but im asking first as i dont want to mess up the computer and have to reinstall everything again. :) some of the other junk that came with the computer i did remove with no dire results as it was minor stuff that i guess the computer didnt need to run properly.

Those programs that you no longer want can be safely removed if you use the Add/Remove from the control panel or the "Uninstall" from the menu. Both do the same thing. If you do not have the install disks for the programs you remove, make sure you DEFINETLY do not want them as you will not be able to re-install after removal.

As an alternative, if you have lots of space on your hard drive, leaving them there will cause no problems and you will have them if you ever decide to use them.:D

re safely removing programs from computer

the programs were already in the computer, so i had no install discs for the programs. i am positive that i will never need them. they were removed properly and safely and i followed the directions that said if not sure hit no and if not sure hit keep etc. the only little glitch i noticed to an almost flawless removal was that my index in my help 98 you know the one with the purple book with the question mark was missing as soon as i got out i got the dreaded hh error performing an illegal operation and will be shut down. something about module itircl.dll and a bunch of gibberish that i dont understand. i thought oh no ,now what did i do? so i went to microsoft and there was a security update q something that fixes a problem with the html help i installed it checked my index and the index was back and working again and no more dreaded error messages. why removing a unneeded program would cause the index to disappear is beyond me as my other computer on a newer windows never does that. but thank you for telling me i could safely remove the unneeded programs and now all is well and i only have stuff that i really need. :)

Hi again, thanks for posting back with your results. That help problem is a known bug in Win98 but looks like you have addressed it OK.:D
