My McAfee subscription expired Dec.30,2006 and was renewed 2 days later. In that time my computer started acting up, screen going blank, attempting to re-boot on it's own, keyboard not responding, errors in OS starting up fully. I finally was successful in getting a full boot to operate in Safe Mode. While in this mode everything worked perfect other than I could not connect to internet. I checked all hard drives and did complete diagnostics on entire system, everything passed. I then did a complete virus scan and no files showed to be infected. However when I exited and system was booting up again entire screen went blank and after about 30 seconds a blue screen appeared with the following message:

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.
This problem seems to be caused by the following file: nv4_disp
The device driver got stuck in an infinite loop. This usually indicates a problem with the device itself or with the device driver programming the hardware incorrectly.

I'm using my son's computer to post this as mine is "shut down" I don't know what to do next to fix this fileor to start my computer properly. Is this a virus? How do I fix?
    thanks.

Do the easy stuff first. Try booting to the f8 options menu and choosing the "Last known good configuration. "

If no joy, try using System Restore (hopefully you have it enabled) to return to a point before the trouble began.

It is not a virus, but an issue with your display adapter driver.

    See:
    Error message: STOP 0x000000EA THREAD_STUCK_IN_DEVICE_DRIVER
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/293078

If you google "nv4_disp infinite loop "
You will find yourself in a large group of people with this error.

Try starting in VGA only mode from the extended boot option menu, rather than Safe Mode.

The general consensus is to update your video drivers and if no luck, replace the card. As Bill intimated, it's a long standing problem with no real single answer. Indeed, you have lots of company. Update your video drivers - try another adapter or setting - reduce the acceleration - replace your video card. All things to try.

If you have an image of the drive when it worked fine, I'd even suggest deploying it as a last ditch effort. That would surely eliminate or confirm your hardware.

Thanks. I finally logged in under Safe Mode and disabled NVIDIA GeForce fx 5200. System now works fine and I can get online to download new driver. Thanks for your help.
