My computer has been very slow. A friend helped me find something called "Whenusave" and "Weatherbug" or "Weather Channel ". We removed them, we think/hope, through the Windows XP Add/Remove in Control Panel. We ran Spybot but AdAware, CA Associates On Line Scan, and Bit Defender or House Call all stalled part way through. My AVG free comes up clean. We downloaded HiJack This and the log is below. Perhaps someone could take a look at it and see if we still have gremlins. Thanks.

Geri - Thanks for your time and effort.

Should note that it took about 15 to 20 minutes for the Add/Remove to populate. We removed the Logitech Desktop Messenger. There were also programs called Logitech Mouseware and Logitech Resource Center but we didn't touch them. We deleted all the references to cookies in the AVGAS scan but there were a number of entries that didn't specifically state "cookies" so we left them. Also noted the following that we didn't recognize:

    WexTech Answer Works
    RAW FILE CONVERTER LE
    Microstaff WINASPI NTB

    Hi Geri

Excellent, concise well formated post. Bold, Color, underlines, great highlighting.

Through and right on the money. And directly to the cleaning of the primary issues and obvious problems.

A model as far as I am concerned!

Makes me a little ashamed of my own text mode posts.

    Keep up the good work!!!!

    Mike

    Geri,

Good to see that you got kudos from mflynn - add ours as well to his.

I think we may be getting there. Here are a few things we noted.

    1 Downloaded and ran ATF

2 Add/Remove dialog box took over 8 minutes to load the listing of installed programs. Much better than before but still pretty slow.

3 Got the AVGAS uninstalled OK and before we restarted we tried to uninstall the Micorstaff WINASPI NTB program. Add/Remove stalled and I finally had to restart with the Add/Remove screen still showing.

4 Should we remove the two remaining Logitech programs (Mouseware and Resource)?

Other than that, things are looking good.

    Hi Piedmont

Since Geri is appearently not online at the moment.

I think he would want you to go ahead and delete these items since they are all useless anyway. He did reccomend removal of these items any way.

Including the Microstaff WINASPI NTB thing.

All of these can be reinstalled later if wanted.

Do this report back the results, and wait a little longer for Geri.

Also give us an overall report on how you feel about the performance issue now. That was the original complaint.

An additional Spy/Adware cleaner you may want run is:

XClean_Micro it is a special theat cleaner and instead of going after everything it only goes after current most prevelent and the worst. Good to run before SpyBot and Adaware.

Opps I missed the fact that it locked up in Add/Remove with WINASPI NTB.

Appearently there is a problem or it has an open file that the installer can not close.

Depending on the installer type it may uninstall in safe mode try that.

Also in Add/Remove look at the top an if you have "Show Updates" checked uncheck it and see if it improves the time it takes to open Add/Remove.

OK to read about Microstaff Winaspi appearently came with a camera or CD/RW or even other programs. XP has built in ASPI (SCSI interface) but some programs have to (or think they have to) use their own.

It has an uninstaller in its program files.

    Also seems to have issues!!!!

If you uninstall it you may end up with a problem with a camera or CD/Writer not working. In which case all you should need to do in reinstall that app.

    click below

    http://www.google.com/search?client...hl=en&q=microstaff+winaspi&btnG=Google+Search

It is possilbe it could cause a slowdown but not likely, unless it is damaged or curupted some how.

If you do uninstall it and need to put it back. Get the latest software for the effected device.

    Geri and Mike,

Thanks so much for all your help. We removed the remaining two Logitech Programs but decided to leave the Microstaff WinASPI since it may be tied to one or more of the camera/photo programs. Things seem to operate much faster now and all seems to be OK. Still have a slow population of the Add/Remove but since we don't anticipate removing many programs in the future, that's not a problem. If you have any more final cleanup instructions, let us know. Otherwise, again, thanks for all your time and attention.

    great piedmont

There is allways improvements to be made.

Only thing I would suggest is a good cleanup, scan, defrag and registry optimize/defrag. How to do them are here on the BBS.

Geri may have some suggestions check back later and see.

I enjoyed this thread. We got it did!!!!!!

Geri did most and a great job at that! And you did a good job by following the instructions.

    Hi Piedmont

    Thanks mflynn :)

Here is what I would have you do along with what mflynn stated.

The AVG anti-spyware showed infections in your system restore, cleaned what it found, but it would be a good idea to make a new fresh restore point if your machine is running better now.

    Here are my recommendations

To turn off and on system restore
You must be logged in as an Administrator to do this. If you are not logged in as an Administrator, the System Restore tab will not be displayed.
Turning off System Restore will clear out all previous restore points.

To turn off Windows XP System Restore:
NOTE: These instructions assume that you are using the default Windows XP Start Menu and have not changed to the Classic Start menu. To re-enable the default menu, right-click Start, click Properties, click Start menu (not Classic) and then click OK.

    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click the My Computer icon, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Check "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives"
    5. Click Apply.
    6. When turning off System Restore, the existing restore points will be deleted. Click Yes to do this.
    7. Click OK.
    8. Restart the computer and follow the instructions in the next section to turn on System Restore.

To turn on Windows XP System Restore:
    1. Click Start.
    2. Right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
    3. Click the System Restore tab.
    4. Uncheck "Turn off System Restore" or "Turn off System Restore on all drives. "
    5. Click Apply, and then click OK
    Make a new restore point.

The following is a list of tools and utilities that I like to suggest to people. This list is full of great tools and utilities to help you understand how you got infected and how to keep from getting infected again.
    1. Spybot Search & Destroy - Uber powerful tool which can search and annhilate nasties that make it onto your system. Now with an Immunize section that will help prevent future infections.
    2. AdAware - Another very powerful tool which searches and kills nasties that infect your system. AdAware and Spybot Search & Destroy compliment each other very well.
    3. SpywareBlaster - Great prevention tool to keep nasties from installing on your system.
    4. SpywareGuard - Works as a Spyware "Shield" to protect your computer from getting malware in the first place.
    5. IE-SpyAd - puts over 5000 sites in your restricted zone so you'll be protected when you visit innocent-looking sites that aren't actually innocent at all.
    6. ATF Cleaner by Atribune.
This program is for XP and Windows 2000 only
      Cleans temporary files

    7. Windows Updates - It is very important to make sure that both Internet Explorer and Windows are kept current with the latest critical security patches from Microsoft. To do this just start Internet Explorer and select Tools > Windows Update, and follow the online instructions from there.
    8. Google Toolbar - Free google toolbar that allows you to use the powerful Google search engine from the bar, but also blocks pop up windows.
    9. Trillian or Miranda-IM - These are Malware free Instant Messenger programs which allow you to connect to multiple IM services in one program! (AOL, Yahoo, ICQ, IRC, MSN)

To find out more information about how you got infected in the first place and some great guidelines to follow to prevent future infections you can read this article by Tony Klein

    Geri and Mike,
Sorry to be so late getting back. We have done the Restore Point removal and created a new Restore Point. We have printed out a couple of copies of the list of tools and utilities that you included. Hopefully, we can follow those instructions and not have to bother you again. The computer is operating fine now. No noted glitches. Again, thanks to both of you for your time and expertise.
