I have 3 PCs at home running Windows XP Pro SP2 with Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection installed.

The 3 PCs are using 192.168.0.x assigned by DHCP server from the D-Link DSL G604T Broadband modem router.

PC1 is connected by wire. PC2 is connected by both wire and wireless. PC3 is just a 802.11g wireless connection.

They work fine even under Trend Micro PC-cillin 2007 (default installation).

I used another notebook running under the same workgroup (MSHOME) as the 3 PCs. The notebook is running XP Pro SP2 in Chinese on DHCP.

Within the Intranet, I can use my notebook (by IE7 browser) to remote connect to PC1 (using http://PC1/rtweb/, or http://192.168.0.10/rtweb/). But unable to remote connect to PC2 and PC3.

I found from my ISP that I have a fixed IP for my broadband modem.

    Two questions:
    1. the notebook cannot find the right Microsoft Remote Desktop Connection download from Microsoft Update. Do I really need one?

    2. When I am out of town, how can I access to my home PCs? Because the IP address has been hidden. What are the procedures / steps that I missed? Do I need to do something on my modem router, say setting some port addresses?

Please help. I'm going out of town next week.

You need to forward some ports in the router.
It would be best to set the target PC with a static IP, rather than obtain IP addressing information from the DHCP server on your router. While your WAN side IP address may be static, your current setup does not afford the same privilige to the target PC.

    Hi Bill,

I can set all my PCs with fix IP addresses like 192.168.0.30 and so on instead of using an IP given by the DHCP server from the D-Link Modem router. Will it work? Because I have only one external fixed IP address.

I checked www.PortForward.com and downloaded a copy for evaluation. But when I clicked the PFConfig icon on desktop, it invoked another application's installer. And it also used up my CPU until I click "End Task" from the Task Manager.

Did anyone who knows how to manually config my D-Link DSL-G604T broadband router (including port forward) so that I can access my home computers from my notebook when I am out of town?

I did not intend for you to download anything from Port Forward.
When on the site, click on the site "Port Forwarding" link at near-top left, below the Banner, and pick your router model.

If you do not See Remote Desktop as a listed application, pick something like Bit Torrent, emule, or WinmX for illustrated manual configuration steps for your router model.

The only ports you need to forward for Remote Desktop to your target PC are TCP and UDP 3389.

And the only workstation that needs a static IP set, is the target PC you want to access remotely. This is because the port forwarding entry is best served with a static IP target. And, this has nothing to do with all the computers sharing a single WAN-side IP address.

    (and uninstall that download!)

I just wrote a long how to and then hit the back key in error.
    Summary
    1) Use real vnc
    2) track the ip with the free version at no-ip.info service
    3) open up the ports to vnc
    go here for help: http://portforward.com/
    4) you will also have to lock the ips in the computers ( as opposed to automatic ips that may change)

all you have to do then is to run the vnc viewer on the remote pc
( can run off a floppy)
    type xxxyourchoiceofname.no-ip.info
type the password if you chose one
And you have full remote access if the computer is on.

An easier way may be to use the trial version of
    Network Magic.
It allows for remote access .
I have not used this feature
My son installed vnc accidentally on a fellows computer the night of New Years seveal years ago.
The person did not talk to me for three months.
A mean kid I know thought that his computer was "possessed ".
I Had the pleasure of asking his mother when I was called "Is your son on drugs ?" There is no question that this kid has substance abuse issues .
