    Hello,

When I start up Microsoft Word from office XP I get the following message:
    "NAVW32.exe Appication error
The instruction at 0x01481408 referenced memory at 0x014a0004
The memory could not be read.
Click on OK to terminate the program. "

When I click "OK" I get the following:
    "Norton Antivirus
The document C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Application Data\Microsoft\ Templates\Normal.dot is still infected. Do you want to delete this file? YES NO "

I get normal startup of MS Word whether I choose YES or NO.

I have un-installed Microsoft Office XP, ran scan disk and cleanup removed the registry references as best I could and then reinstalled Office. I did the same with Norton AV.

I have done a complete scan of my hard drive (several times)with Norton AV as well as another AV product (AVG) but found nothing.

How can I view or find out what is residing at "0x01481408" and 0x014a0004? What do these numbers mean?

Is this a macro virus? A residual left from a deleted virus? An incompatability problem between MS Word (Office?) and Norton AV?

    Hi Robert Kidd
Welcome to the boards. Is there any chance you know the name of the virus you were infected by?
I understand that you're using Norton's at the moment...but I'd think the safer course of action at this point would be to run one of the free online virus scanners....and let it see if a virus is still present.
    Grisoft
    Housecall
    Panda
    Symantec

    And for Trojans.....might I suggest:
    Tauscan

Thanks for your help and advice Daisy,

I have scanned my hard drive with PC Cillin, AVG, several of the Symantec individual virus scanners as well as a couple trojan scanners like The Cleaner, Tauscan and of course Norton AV. All have come up with nothing and tell me everything is clean. This has been going on for a while now (two weeks) and I have scanned my drive so many times I am getting dizzy from watching the file names scroll by.

I have never had a virus infection because I am very careful although I receive several by email every day due to being the author and owner of a few web sites. I am always very careful about what I do with any attachments and never open them unless I know exactly what they are and even then I scan them first even though they have already been scanned as they were downloaded. I update my virus software regularly. (Sometimes twice a day)

I know there are several thousand (million?) people out there running Norton AV with Office XP on Win2k but I still wonder if there isn't something strange going on between them. Do you know what those numbers mean? ( "The instruction at 0x01481408 referenced memory at 0x014a0004 ") How or where can I find out about those numbers? Are they a reference to my ram memory? Is one of my ram modules not working correctly?

    Robert -

The memory locations are simply addresses in hex (base 16). Won't do much good since the data there will be volatile. Sometimes it is possible to find "fix-it" articles that cite the same memory locations but I couldn't find any matches with these two.

As to Office starting if you say yes or no to deleting normal.dot, it sounds like the file is not infected so if you select "no ", it starts fine. If you select "yes" and normal.dot is deleted, it will be recreated when office starts - you will just lose any customization you have done to the template.

I can't find references to your exact problem (other than the possibility of the goner virus which was the first thing that occured to me as well) but did find an article dealing with another app conflict. Mainly, the article has instructions for removing the NAV plug-in for office and I'm wondering if the error will go away if you do so. Take a look Here.

After disabling Norton AV and Norton PF and starting up "Tauscan" to ferret out trojans it stopped at 51% and froze at that point so I shut it down using "Task Manager ". There was no indication that it had found any trojans but when I started up "Word" the original problem was gone completely. I then enabled Norton PF and Norton AV. So far there is no problem and MS Word is functioning qwith out a glitch as well as the Norton products. Makes me wonder wht went wrong ot what Tauscan did to fix it. I tried to run Tauscan again but it froze again. Anybody have the same trouble with Tauscan?
