    from the following link ---

    http://www.tweakxp.com/TweakXP/display.asp?id=1105

    Classic Win2000 Search in XP

    Navigate here: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\CabinetState
Add a new string (REG_SZ) called "Use Search Asst" - set the value to "no" and you will have the classic win2000 search and none of that XP categorized nonsense, you dont even have to reboot!
(TweakUI for XP does this al-la GUI style)

    Couple of comments here.

The value to add is written UseSearchAsst with no spaces.

I tried it and it didn't seem to do anything. However, I used the "change behavior" option on the search window and got mine to begin with a 2K style search window but with the XP thing available as an option. I also got that stupid dog to go away.

After the "change behavior" to get searching like I wanted, I deleted the reg value UseSearchAsst and nothing changed.

I did find another reg tweak I like. If using OfficeXP, you can add a key that will minimize Outlook to the system tray rather than the task bar.

    [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\10.0\Outlook\Preferences]
    "MinToTray "=dword:1

Funny thing Newt, use the term as given (include spaces) and it works fine. Go figure. It's not case sensitive either. I just stuck it in and it works fine.

Now if someone could tell me how to stop it from defaulting to searching all drives (C:;D:;E:;F: ) I'd be happy with XP search, as I was with Win9x.

Thanks for the info Zephyr. I never even thought to try it with the spaces.

As to restricting the search, it seems to default to the drive/folder you have the focus set on so if you have WE set to c:\, that is the default it should want to search.

If your shortcut for starting WE is like the example below, it should open at C:\

%windir%\explorer.exe /select,c:\ (and note there are NO spaces in /select,c:\)

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /select,c:\ should do the same thing if you don't like %windir%

And if you prefer the classic look,

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,/select,c:\ (again, note the absence of spaces after the space following explorer.exe)

After I finally got XP search as good as it could be, I still didn't like it so I opted for PowerDesk which is available as freeware or you can pay for a premium version.

It has a File Find feature that will be listed on your Start Menu programs. Just right click that and select "Pin To Start Menu ". That makes for easy search access and it solves all those problems that XP search has.

Perhaps M$ will come out with a patch but for the time being, I'm a Power desk fan.

BTW knucles, Power Desk is nothing new for me. I've used it all the way back to Win95 and I can assure you that you'll like it.

I'm glad you are coming to appreciate PD. I'm like you, I would rather M$ fix their shortcomings but they don't seem to be listening. Their old stuff was much better. The person who came up with that damned dog and the rest of that **** should be sterilized before he spawns.

    Regards.

If you want to revert back to the 'old' search option as in Win98,
download the "Powertoys" set from M$ and install "TweakUI ". Go to the "explorer" tab and it the "settings" column, check the box that says "Use Classic Search in Explorer ". This gets rid of the XP-like interface which you can't do just by messing with the preferences in the search panel.

Question for Barbara Ann and All.

I found out (3) things, (A) I have a old version of Tweakui installed, (B) I need to remove the old one first..it said. (C) I have d/l the new xp version from MS.

I reviewed the help (how to) file on removing the old verion and it's not in the add/remove list and thats the only suggestion.

    Ideas on removal Please??

There seems to be some misunderstanding here. Let me attempt to confuse you even more!

I think the problem may be that you are looking for a tab that says "Explorer ". That's not the case. Open TweakUI For XP and click on the actual word "Explorer ". (No Tab) Then scroll the right hand field (Labeled "Settings ") down and place a check mark in the next to the last option line. It will say "Use Classic Search In Explorer ".

As Barbara-Ann mentioned, all this really does is insert the previously discussed Registry entry using a GUI interface. The end result is still a rather clumsy search function. When opened from the Start menu, it still defaults to searching all local drives. I normally just want to search the boot drive so I have to change the setting each time. You can't make it stick.

I know I can open a search from Explorer and place the focus on the boot drive prior to clicking Search, but that isn't very handy when I'm wanting to do a spontaneous search and Explorer isn't open.

That's why I migrated to PD. Right from the get-go, it defaults to searching the boot drive only but will stick to the last place you choose to search. Very intuitive and friendly. M$, are you listening?

This is in reference to Newt's post of 23 July, in which he lists various command line options for the Windows Explorer shortcut. In that message he stresses the fact that there are no spaces in the syntax, other than the one following explorer.exe.

I use c:\windows\explorer.exe /n, /e, c:\ as my shortcut command line; note that I do include spaces ... one after each comma.

I think this just illustrates how flexible Windows can be in some respects, when it's so totally inflexible in so many other respects.
