I have been having major problems over the past 2 days.

When starting up, a screen comes up (black and white) asking if I want to start Windows or Windows Recovery Console or F8 for further options.

The only way my desktop comes up is if I click F8 and then select Last Known Configuration. Even then, it takes about 15 minutes to load the desktop.

Then when I do eventually get on, it keeps freezing every minute for about 10 seconds, when nothing responds at all - just freezes.

Even Ctrl Alt Del, doesn''t bring up the normal box - it comes up as taskmgr.exe

I tried also to defragment: 'Microsoft Management Console: Snap-in failed to initiate' It doesn't work.

The laptop came with no recovery disc - so not sure if I can start from fresh or what.

    Please could someone help.

    Thanks so much.

Likely several things need to be done, but the first should be to use Recovery Console, as it is already installed.

    Logon as Administrator
    chkdsk C: /r

This may take some time to run.

Report back the results and we can go to additonal steps.

When selecting option 2 - recovery console:

it asks whether i want to log in thru C: xxx or E: yyyy
    I said C:xxxx

It then automatically said it was the administrator loggin in
But required a password - I dont have any passwords set so dont know how to progress through this screen to load the recovery

    Thanks.

If XP Home there will be no password just hit enter.

If XP Pro there can be a password or not so just hit enter.

If it won't let you thru then it becomes much more complex ,the password will have to be reset which requires special boot disks, programs.

These can be downloaded from the www and burnt to a cd but it will have to be done on another computer since this one is inoperatable.

Let's hope the enter key works.
