As an example, a game requires a minimum of 2ghz of cpu. If I have a duo-processor of 1ghz each, will that satisfy the requirement?

It might be more helpful if you simply told us what processor you have.

To measure the performance of a cpu, you don't add up the core speeds. A processor's speed is simply the overall speed of the processor. For example, if you have a 2.6Ghz Core 2 Duo processor, you surely do not have 5.2Ghz of processing power, you simply have 2.6Ghz of power.

It might be theoretically possible to compare such a cpu to a single-core 5.2Ghz cpu but that would assume that each core is fully loaded (with work) but even then you'd still end up short due to various factors. Gaming is one example where, in most games, the load is not split well at all and you are better off with a single-core cpu. But I'm generalizing there.

So I guess the answer would definitely be no. Are you sure your cpu is not a 2.0Ghz dual-core cpu? I've never heard of a dual-core cpu that runs at only 1.0Ghz.

    re: duo processor and games

Thank you. My current computer is a Dell 733Mhz and my main use is surfing(dsl) and playing a few games. From your excellent answer, dual processor does not seem to play any significant role in games. But does it make a big difference in surfing?

The rating system has changed for the core 2 Intels. At least they no longer use the old rating system. A core 2 duo E6300 with a clock speed of 1.8 Ghz and a FSB of 1.066 can outperform an AMD 4200+.

You should look up the specifications for your model at the Dell website. Check on the game's website for updated information about system requirements and if the new CPUs are included.

The system could possibly be underclocked using "setup" defaults in the BIOS. These are used so that any problems can be remedied before setting the system to full speed. It is a troubleshooting setting.

There should be no difference in surfing. If you wanted to play multiplayer internet games, a fast internet connection is required, the size of the CPU, graphics, RAM will only help on your system, not forwarding your moves to the game server.
