I have a compaq notebook. Compaq provides quickrestore cd's for reformating. I've successfully reformatted using these cd's, but this time when I put in cd1 and reboot as directed, instead of getting an instruction page, I get a dos screen that looks like this:

    Starting...
Windows is bypassing your startup files.

    A:/>

And it just sits like that. I do not have an A drive. My CD drive is D. I went to hp's help chat and they told me the files on the cds are corrupt. I thought I'd check here for ideas before ordering new ones.

    Can anyone help?

    Thanks!

Welcome to the BBS kmyers. Glad to have you

You say you have been successful using the recovery cd's in the past....then they are not corrupt. I would think that they need a good cleaning (fingerprints and the like). Also look for scratches other damages.

If they are damaged, you can get another copy from the manufacturer.

I cleaned the cd's. There doesn't appear to be any scratches.

I went a head and ordered new ones but I was hoping to use the long vacation to do the reformat and reinstall programs.

Does any other CD work in your drive?

Pull the battery and the power cord. Wait 5-10 minutes. Plug the power cord back in but leave the leave the laptop battery out pf the machine. Try booting now - And?
