Hi all, not sure if this post is in the correct forum.

Im having a slight problem downloading an files from microsoft servers, im trying to get visual c# express but when i click on the download linke the site times out. This happens with firefox, internet explorer and FreshDownload (Download Manager). I have tried resetting my router and resetting my network connection but to no avail. I have also tried to download msn messenger but i get the same timeout.

The copy of windows i have is XP Pro x64, Legal and Genuine Validated

Anyone have any ideas whats going on?

    Thanks Themodem

    Use only IE.
Turn off the Download Manager -- it will reject you for this alone.

I should note that the Express servers are slightly under-equipped, and at times overwhelmed.

I note too, that it would not hurt to add the server to your Approved Site list. Do so as genericly as possible.

For those not aware of Microsoft "giveaways" under discussion, they are a terrific deal, including the fact that they are free. These are fairly full-featured versions of Microsoft developer products.
    • SQL Server 2005
    • Visual Developer Studio 2005 Express Edition
    • Visual Web Developer 2005 Express Edition
    • Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition
    • Visual C# 2005 Express Edition
    • Visual C++ 2005 Express Edition
    • Visual J# 2005 Express Edition
The download and installation requirements are a little different from what you are used to with Microsoft Download, so see this reference:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/install/

    Microsoft Express Products Download Troubleshooter:
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/support/troubleshooting/

And find some way to stop the Download accelerator from even starting.
Disabling is not enough. You are not really using the Microsoft Download servers, but those of MSDN and Technet and they are very fussy.

You might have an issue if you are validated with an MSDN or Technet subscription service. If nothing above helps, use your contacts through the MSDN/Technet folks and ask for a direct download link.

Do you get an error message? If so what was the message?

Is it just taking a looooong time to start? This is normal for MSDN/Technet servers.

What if anything appears in your Event logs relating to your problem?

Unfortunatly theres no errors in the error log, no error messages other than the (Firefox)The connection has timed out : The server at download.microsoft.com is taking too long to respond.
(Internet Explorer)Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage

Please, do not use Firefox. Use IE.
It needs IE and the Active-X controls involved to validate your license.

    I mentioned this earlier.

Second, the servers are very busy and limited in capacity. Try again at 2 a.m.

If you cannot resolve the issue contact MSDN support, explain the problem, and hopefully they will provide direct download sources for you: http://lab.msdn.microsoft.com/productfeedback/

But the servers are very, very busy. These are not the same servers as used for Windows Update or Microsoft downloads. I gave you a chore earlier using these servers so that I was sure the underlying services such as BITS on your machine were working correctly.

Last note: you need both .NET Framework 1.1 and .NET Framework 2.0 installed.

    Hi Bill,

Don't think so - I don't have any .NET installed and I can use WU w/o any problems.

    Regards - Charles

You misunderstood why I asked the question.

Depending on which Express package you installed, .NET Framework 1.1 or 2.0 is a requirement. The Express download process is not like a regular Windows download, and my concern was that it was failing because the target system was not meeting minimum system requirements. I still have concerns in this regard, as the poster's other machine (I am guessing XP-32-bit) had no issue, but his machine (XP-64) did. There should not be an issue with XP-64; but that does not mean there is not one. The Express downloader I suspect is trying to match the actual download to some discovery process on the target machine. And is failing at this point for the XP-64 system.

I had no conception that any .NET framework was necessary for WU. My test of the WU and Windows Download site was to make sure that BITS was working as it should; validation was working as it should; and this seemed an easy way to test.

Regards, and to you sir, Happy New Year,
    Bill
