Ok, now that my computer is loading up, when I open my network connections, it shows that I only have a wireless network connection. How do I make is so I can just plug the cord up to the modem and the computer? I would much rather use a cord than wireless. I tried just plugging the cord up but nothing happends.

I need to be able to access the internet to activate windows. Does this require another key of some sort???

    Hi,
I am not one of the most experienced computer people in the field of Networking but maybe what I did may be of some help to you...Since no one was able to assist you within the last 5 days, I will try my best...

I was given a Laptop that had Windows 98...It did not have an Ethernet card, so because I have too many desktop computers to work on, I dropped my Laptop off to a local computer store...They Installed a Wireless Adapter...

At my home I have three computers Networked to a DSL (Verizon) router and since I did not have an Ethernet card in the Laptop, I purchased a Network Adapter USB connection...

I connected an Ethernet cable to the Laptop, then to my router and bang I was on and riding the Internet like a wild horse...So if you have a router and your Laptop has an Ethernet card, try what I did...If you are trying to connect to a modem, to the best of my knowledge that will not work...You may have to make sure both computers are off, hook up the Ethernet cable, boot one computer up at time preferably the desktop one first, then the laptop...Hope this helps...

    Install Drivers Network Card

The first question is what is the operating system - Windows XP, 98 SE etc.
First check your device manager to see if the card shows up in the network card list.
If it does - see if there is a question or exclamation mark beside it or a red x.
If there is a red mark beside it you may simply have to right click and enable.
Question mark means the driver is not installed properly. If the driver is installed properly it will say " device is workimg properly ".
If it says the device is not installed properly - right click , uninstall driver are you sure ..yes...yes > reboot.
After reboot ( if the card is seated properly in tight) it should try to reinstall itself.
If you have windows xp the drivers for the card should be available.
If you have an older version of Windows perhaps not and you may need to download the driver disk for the network card.
You should be able to tell physically on the card.
It will be written name of manufacturer , model and version ( revision....).
If you have access to another computer you can download at the manufacturer - d-link,smc etc. Or you may have cds that came with the computer or card. If you are really stuck with no computer and no disks at the worst buy a new card complete with driver disk. Sort of catch 22 if you cannot get on the internet you cannot download the driver.
Perhaps the networking in your bios is turned off.
This is unlikely if you have not played around with your bios.
    Reset to factory defaults.
    Hope this helps.
P.S. cable ethernet connection is always preferred for connection unless of course it is a laptop and someone may snag your cord and ruin the computer.
