alleycat, Try logging in to Safe Mode as the Administrator and try doing the install there. It may be a permissions issue or some other conflict that can be solved that way. If no joy, contact the manufacturer's web site for any support that may be available. Check your documentation also for any leads.

You can get to Safe Mode by pressing the f8 key repeatedly as soon as the initial POST screen fades. Then you'll see the Windows Advanced Options Menu that offers that and other possibilities.

I agree completely with "surferdude2 "'s suggetion to try again in Safe Mode, as Administrator.

But see if there is not a log file created during the installation. Surferdude2 is concerned about an "Access Denied" error, and his steps should avoid this.

My concern is whether you have ACL/DACL rights, not permissions, to create a permanent shared object, and install/remove a device driver.

Please advise if your computer is used in a Domain setting. If not, we can use NTRIGHTS or SUBINACL to set things right in the registry.

Some, not all, wireless adapter software will make assumptions about their Service entries that are inappopriate. Check the Web site for the device and see if you cannot just run the device under XP SP2 without additional service additions.

Bill - I tried some of the solutions to no avail

    Reinstall the InstallScript engine
To reinstall the InstallScript engine from InstallShield Developer, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
    2. Open the following folder: C:\Program Files\InstallShield\Developer\Redist\Language Independent\i386.
    3. Double-click Isscrpt.msi.
    4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen

Found InstallShield in "Common Files" but no Isscrpt.msi
Found Isscrpt.msi elsewhere, reinstalled but no change in situation

    Register Idriver and Msiexec
To register Idriver and Msiexec, follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click Run, type "C:\Program Files\Common Files\InstallShield\Developer\7\Intel 32\IDriver.exe" /REGSERVER, and then click OK.
    2. Click Start, click Run, type C:\Windows\System32\msiexec.exe /REGSERVER, and then click OK.

Clicked Run, copy & pasted req'd text from above only to be told that what i wanted couldn't be found

    Change Permissions
Log on to the Windows XP computer with an administrator user account, and verify that you have the correct permissions for the C:\Windows\Installer folder. Follow these steps: 1. Click Start, click All Programs, point to Accessories, and then click Windows Explorer.
    2. Click Folder Options on the Tools menu.
    3. Click the View tab.
    4. Click Show hidden files and folders, and then click OK.
    5. Locate the folder C:\Windows\Installer.
    6. Right-click the Installer folder, and then click Properties.
    7. Click the Security tab.
    8. Click System, and then verify that the Full control check box is selected.
    9. Click Administrators, and then verify that the Full control check box is selected.
    10. Click your user name, and then verify that the Full control check box is selected.

Installer not listed and only tabs I get on properties box are General Sharing & Customize. I know that de-selecting the simple sharing option will give access to permissions but alas the version of XP on my desktop does nothave the option to de-select it in the file advance settings

Any further help would be very gratefully recieved.

Bill - I've tried what you suggested in your last reply but unfortunately I still can not install the adapter.

Install in Safe Mode with Networking with a logon as Administrator.

To enter Safe Mode, hit the F8 key early and often beginnning at system start. An Advanced Boot Menu will appear. Select Safe Mode with Networking.

Logon as "Administrator ", and not your usual username.

    Thanks for your prompt reply

Did as you suggested and got an immediate

1607 Unable to Install InstallShield Scripting Runtime

The installation process seems to go a little further when not in safe mode

Logon in Normal Mode as Administrator.

Then carefully do all the steps, including checking registry permissions, discussed here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/888019

I know you did this previously, but now you have hopefully updated the Windows Installer, and the Installshield installer files.

I am concerned that you seem to be progressively losing permissions for the Administrator account.

The Administrator has no restrictions on accessing the computer in Safe Mode.

If you logon as Administrator in Normal Mode do you get the same error?

I am able to logon as Administrator in safe mode but get an immediate "1607" message when trying to install the adapter from the cd.

I am unable to logon by typing "Administrator" in normal mode due to the apparent account restrictions

I am extremely appreciate of this help btw

The only fixes I know of for a 1607 error were covered earlier.

There is a slightly different version from InstallShield you might try:
    http://consumer.installshield.com/kb.asp?id=Q108340

If this is a computer from your office, there may be account restrictions in place that will prevent you intalling this device.

The computer is at home and used for the family. I wonder if someone has inadvertently altered a setting to deny access to the Aministrator account?

I'll try the slightly different version.

    Many thanks

    1. Uninstall the Wireless software that you have installed.

    2. Do some cleanup. Download and install these:

The following are the best free cleaners below

    DCleaner http://www.majorgeeks.com/DCleaner_d4790.html

    ATF-Cleaner http://www.atribune.org/content/view/25/2/

Finally **** CCleaner get the slim version http://www.ccleaner.com/download/builds.aspx

    3. Boot to safe mode and run these

Dcleaner and ATFClean are purely disk cleaners but CClean also has a registry cleaner (issues), run this also as many times as it takes to come up clean.

    4. Reboot to normal.

    5. In Services make sure Wireless Zero Configuration is Starting Automatically.

    6. Download and install
    Dial-A-Fix
    http://www.softpedia.com/get/System/System-Miscellaneous/Dial-a-fix.shtml

Dial-A-Fix is very safe it only reinstalls scripting etc, and tries to re register important DLL's that may have become unregistered.

But another important thing it does, is as it does its thing it may fail or not find what it is supposed to find.

These are the things you need to put back into your system. Most times it does not find missing files. When it does write them down.

    7. Run it:
    7a. Clear Restrictive policies

7b. then check every box and click go
Make note of errors (missing files etc) write them down

7c. After these finish click the Hammer for the tools menu and run
    Repair permissions.

    8. Reboot and retry your install.

    Get back!

    Mike
