    Hello Kekea

Not a lot of info here.

    What OS?

But at least do this and get back to us.

While computer is restarting (screen goes completely black) then shows a BIOS and probably counting memory.

Continuously tap the F8 key to get the boot menu. Chose Safe mode. If it will enter safe mode then it will be much easier to fix.

Clean up all temps. If you have no cleanup utilities or do not know how at least do the following.

Start-Run type "cleanmgr /sageset:99" without the quotes. In the window that comes up check all entries.

Then Start-Run type "cleanmgr /sagerun:99" without the quotes.

It may take a long time if you haven't cleaned up recently and have compressed files on. In any case give it at least 20 minutes.

After the cleanup try a normal boot.

If it still fails then get back to us.

    Mike

    Safe Mode

Try to to into "safe mode ".
You do this by tapping repeatedly either F5 or F8 repeatedly when windows begins to start up ( after boot up past your bios screen) then when it begins to load windows.
If F5 does not work try F8.
    First choose safe mode.
    Let it load then reboot.
If that still does not work and you can get into a safe mode then choose "last known configuration that worked ".
If you are really desperate to get into safe mode and it will not let try removing a piece of hardware ( sound card, nic card , a stick of ram etc)

also you should be able to remove the update by either using system restore in the start > all programs > accessories > system tools > system restore which is on the bottom
    Restore to an earlier date.
Sometimes you can do it in the add / remove programs of the control panel.

Kekea Confirm that you can get to screen that allows you to chose SAFE MODE.

Your last post did not make that clear.

If you can chose SAFE MODE and it still reboots.

Then go back again to the F8 and chose VGA Mode if it is listed.

    If it is not listed.

Then go back again to the F8 and chose "Last Good.. "

    Let us know!

    In Recovery Console:

    attrib -h -s -r C:\boot.ini

    Bootcfg /Rebuild

You can edit, add, subtract the load parameters. Discussion:

    • The bootcfg /rebuild command scans the hard disks of the computer for Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP installations, and then displays the results. You can modify the settings for any detected Windows installations.

You may receive a message that is similar to the following message:
    Total Identified Windows Installs: 2

    [1] C:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu) The description that appears in the boot menu
Enter Operating System Load Options: (that is only in this user case: /fastdetect)

    [2] D:\Windows
Add installation to boot list? (Yes/No/All):
Enter Load Identifier: (Custom description for an operating system loading from the Boot menu) As above
Enter Operating System Load Options: As above

I think you have a hardware Driver (HAL) issue here and Bill's procedure will still not correct that.

Do Bill's procedure before proceeding just in case. If nothing changes then do the below.

I think it is time for an Overlay Install of XP. Also known as a Repair install.

This reinstalls XP without losing all you installed programs or email and other data and settings.

To do this you will need to boot from the original install XP CD. And you will need the Windows XP KEY.

In a nutshell: If you do this, after you boot setup at a point it asks you if you would like to repair by using repair console. DO NOT chose that first offer to repair. Just continue.

Then Setup will detect an existing XP installation and offer to repair it. This is the second offer to repair and the one you want.

From there on it is normal install. And should handle your problem.

After it boots back to normal. You should do Cleanups and update all Windows updates as the repair may knock you back on some updates.

Of course update your Virus scanner and Spy/Adware scanners also and run them.

WARNING: Do not do this if you are not comfortable with it because if you do not chose the second repair you could lose you data. Get back and Bill and I or others will guide you.

Sorry so long getting back but it is Christmas, so Merry Christmas to you and Bill all on this thread.

    Mike
