 I had some trojan and worm problems the other day and after using AVG to clean the problems , I can no longer connect to the net . My LAN connection Icon has an exclamation mark next to it and when I click on repair----it comes back with action could not be completed because it cannot renew the IP address. I am currently connected through my router on my laptop using the same LAN. I have tried updateing the drivers for the onboard Ethernet card on my desktop computer and even changed to a PCI LAN card with updated drivers to no avail. I am almost sure I'm missing something simple ---but -- HELP!!!!!!!! Its driving me nuts. Any imput would be appreciated ---thanks :D

Download WinSock XP Fix. Put it on a disk or flash drive or memory stick or whatever you have (might fit on a floppy, it's 1.4 megs) and take it to the computer with the problem and run it.

That usually fixes the damage to the winsock settings that spyware often leaves behind.

If you are using Windows XP with Service Pack 2, please do not use WinsockFix.

It is perfectly fine for all other versions of Windows.

    For Windows XP with SP2:

    Start, Run, cmd

    netsh winsock reset

Wait for a command that a reset is necessary. Reboot and test.

XP Service Pack 2 made important changes in the Winsock2 service entry of the TCP/IP stack in the registry that are not reflected in WinsockFix by Option^Explicit.

If you did use WinsockFix under XP SP2, please do the above steps to repair the Winsock service stack entries caused by using this utility.

I think your brain does pretty well - thats exactly the fix I would have tried under the same circumstances. I had no idea that SP2 made changes to the Winsock2 Service entry. Thanks Bill - I'll sure file that tip away for future use.
