When I try to run disk defragmenter a window comes up and says, "Disk Defragmenter has detected that chkdsk is scheduled to run on the volume (C:). Please run chkdsk /f. "

My OS is Windows 2000 Professional

When I run chkdsk /f from the run window the pop up window says, "Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the system restarts? Y/N ". I type in Y and hit enter and restart the computer. The computer boots up normally and does not run chkdsk. Disk defragmenter gives me the same message. No changes. What can I do to resolve this problem?

Try running Defrag/Chkdsk from the Safe Mode.

If still no go, you could get a hard drive diagnostic tool (from the disk manufacturer's website) ans check the hard drive for errors.

You could always try to defrag if you wish using an alternate program such as the Norton Speed disk.
Norton or Symantec now was the originator of the defrag program that Microsoft enhanced.
The speed disk should be an enhanced version of defrag so it is all the same if not better.

The recent versions of Windows come with a defragmenter that was written by "Executive Software" of Burbank, Calif. A couple years ago, I bought their upgraded pgm. "Diskeeper Pro" which is an improved, faster version of the standard defragger in Windows. I recommend it. (Don't know if it will override your error, but it is worth having anyway!)- LOL

Alternatively you could run the program "Disk Doctor" in Norton Utilities.

You can always turn off Task Scheduler in Services, then disable it. Then you can run defrag and have no problems.
