Images won't populate

I'm running XP with IE7. The majority of the sites that I visit, will either only populate random images or none at all - I've looked to see if there's any distinction between jpg or gif or any other and haven't seen a specific pattern.

I've got a cable internet connection that is running (depending on which speed test I use) between 4 and 8 megs, so I know it's not just the connection. I also have a laptop still running on Me that has no problems bringing up the images.

That's why I'm thinking it's something on this specific computer or with IE7.

    Any thoughts or recommendations?

    Thanks in advance.

What kind of firewall do you use? Sometimes this problem can be caused by them. Zone Alarm for example has an ad blocking feature. Depending on how it's set, it can block all ads or just some.

If you use a third party firewall try starting window's built in firewall and then turn off the third party one and see if things change.

I tried that. I'm running the full McAfee suite and I disabled the Firewall. Then I doublechecked the Windows Firewall and that was okay. I still can't get all the images.

Are there certain settings I should adjust on the firewalls?

seawoolf--What is in place of the images?
Right click on the spot where an image should be|Show Picture. Any help?
Right click on the spot where an image should be|Properties. What does it say in the Address line? Is it an advertising site's URL?
Since this is happening only with some sites, I guess the setting in Advanced tab to Show Pictures is checked.
Did these images display in IE6?

    Armestier,

Thanks for the suggestions, but again, I'm coming up empty. Did have one small discovery, though.

If I right click on the space where the image should be and go to properties, it only gives info on the main page - as if the image doesn't even exist. There's no placeholder or anything. I honestly don't remember if they always opened in IE6.
Now, something similar is starting to happen on the desktop. When I open a regular folder, sometimes the images just have a generic placeholder without giving me the actual icon or thumbnail.

Any chance the two are related?

There is a reasonable chance the two are related. There can be completely independent reasons for this failure to view images in both instances.

Have you uninstalled any graphics or image viewer application recently? Some removals can leave the native DLLs unregistered.

Try this as a first crack at the issue:

    Start, Run, regsvr32 /i shimgvw.dll

While formally a reboot should not be needed to test this change, humor me and do one anyway.

    Please report your results.

    Bill,

I ran the first fix you suggested - told me that it was successful and so I tried a complete reboot. Still nothing.

I don't recall removing/uninstalling any graphics programs recently.

How about spyware programs? Do you have any running that may have some type of setting that blocks ads? I don't use any of them myself so I can't really point you in the right direction but it's something you might check into.

A hosts file could also be the cause. Look in your windows\system32\drivers\etc folder for a file named hosts. It won't have an extension. Open it in notepad and see if there's anything listed in there. I've never added anything to mine and this is what it should look like if it's not being used.

If you see a bunch of ad serving websites in there, back the file up and then remove everything except what you see above. There may also be an entry for your antivirus email scanning function. If so, leave it. I don't really know if any of them use the hosts file anymore or not. Once you've deleted them, then try using your web browser.

Thanks again Zander, but still nothing

no spyware (at least none that I installed, can't guarantee it didn't attach itself to something else

Checked the hosts file and that shows exactly what you said it should

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Security, Internet, Custom

    Scroll to the Miscellaneous section.

Enable: Access data sources across Domains.

It is not uncommon for the referenced file to be located outside of the "Domain" from which the page is being displayed.

    One last test for me:

What happens if you add the site as genericly as possible to your Allowed Sites list? Similarly, add the site to the Pop-blocker allowed list.

    e.g. *.windowsbbs.com

seawoolf--Did this start immediately after installing IE?
    If not, you could
    1) try a System Restore to a time before the problem started and/or
    2) Start|Run|type sfc /scannow|OK. Wait. You may be asked to insert your Windows CD.

I am still puzzled that there is nothing where the images should be and that right click|Properties shows only the main page's URL. (How do you know there should be images there? And how do you know the unseen images are .jpg and .gif images?)
Are you sure the URL you see does not end with an image file type extension (like .jpg, .png or .gif, etc.)? If the website hosts its own images, then the URL would, indeed, mainly be that of the website, but the last few letters would show a file type extension.
Also if you right click on a blank spot on the webpage|View Source, you may be able to pick out the URL or HTML code of the missing image. (Do Edit|Find for .jpg for example.)
