I installed new modem and changed Power settings to system standby after 45 min. On retrieval, sound does not work. Before new card and new setting, only monitor was turned off in Display Properties>Power. After reboot, sound OK until goes to standby. On modem setup, I answered question to use system sound as OK. Thought it read "to use computer speaker. "

Modem is an AOpen FM56 -SVV Soft PCI Modem

    Hello Tom,

Right after reboot when sound is ok - go into Sounds & Audio Devices via the Control Panel > look thru all the advanced settings and make a note of the settings.

After the sound stops working, do the same. What might be happening is that one of the sound souces or the speakers get muted. At least that'll narrow it down some.

What do you mean by that? That would seem to point to a repair of the OS.

    Regards - Charles

    Yes, Charles,

I noted the settings in Sound & Multimedia. Will compare when sound stops.

OS got fouled starting last November, 05 - Feb, 06 when ISP went bad and INet Conxn wnet south. Seemed like hacking or bad download. OS not worked well during reboot since. Have network unit without disk and waiting to upgrade to an XP Pro then Vista. I would need to get a 2K disk to repair OS.

Sound difficulties not related to OS problems. They just started recently.

    Simply reboot the computer.
Printers as well seem to have trouble when coming out of standby mode.

Thank you for the help, gentlemen.

I removed the setting for standby only to turn off monitor. That seems to work, though it would be nice to use standby.

Rebooting works too, though it takes too long to do since the system files were compromised.
