Outlook 2003 downloads 2 copies of all attachments

Strangest thing. In the folder where Outlook puts attachments from incoming emails, there is an original plus a copy of every attachment. Each copy is named the same as the original with a (2) added. In addition to the attachments, I think Outlook is downloading all incoming emails twice although it is displaying just one. I say this because the progress indicator will tell me that 8 emails, for example, are being downloaded but when the process is finished only 4 appear in my In-Box (or junk mail folder).

Any ideas? I would love to solve this because downloading email always takes twice as long as it should.

    Thanks.

Is this a home machine or an office machine?
When you look in Tools->Accounts, how many accounts do you have setup?

    Still getting 2 copies

    Hi Steve,
Thanks for taking time for this. Just one account shows under Tools>E-Mail Accounts. In fact, yesterday I archived all my folders and deleted that account just to start over. I created a new account (identical to my original) and tested it by sending myself an attachment. Sure enough, Outlook downloaded the attachment twice.

I think this goes back to when I first migrated from Eudora to Outlook earlier this year. As an Outlook newbie I must have just set up something wrong. My thinking now is that I should just remove and re-install Outlook. Can that be done without deleting all of MS Office? Would you advise that?

    Thanks again for your time.

Within the account settings is an option to leave mail on server. I'm guessing that it's enabled...If you disable it it'll remove all the old mail that is on the server and hopfully will fix the problem.

    Continuing...

    Hi and thanks again Steve,
I looked for that option to "leave messages on the server" but that box was not checked. Bummer. I was hoping you had hit upon it.

Back to my more drastic solution: Is it feasible to re-install Outlook so I can just start fresh (without re-installing all of MS Outlook)? Or is that too drastic for this nagging problem? I'm happy to try other possibl solutions, of course, but I'm stumped.

First try clicking on Help->Detect and Repair.

If you uninstall/reinsinstall copy your .pst files to a different folder "just in case. "

Can I uninstall Outlook by itself?

    Hi again,

I ran Detect & Repair...but to no avail. Do you have any advice on uninstalling Outlook -- or perhaps a Knowledge Base article about such an uninstall that I have overlooked? The Remove Programs options that I see all seem to require me to uninstall all of MS Office. I don't want to do that.

    Thanks again.

You have to click Office - you'll then be promted to select all or part of Office...Can also uninstall via the Office cd.

    Thanks

Thanks Steve. I thought that was probably how it worked but I didn't want to click that Remove button on Office until I knew for sure.
I think that's probably the route I will go -- after I back up everything.
    I appreciate your contribution here.
