Sorry I didn't get back to this, overlooked it.

I'm curious if your running the latest version of MSN IM? I'm running it and have had many BSODs and had the app peg at nearly 100% CPU and have to kill it with PE and restart it, then it's ok.

For me I think it's the MSN IM combined with IE7 which seems to have slowed down things for me as well.

I'm hoping the latest updates from MS will help make IE7 a bit quicker. (My phishing filter is off btw, always has been)

sorry for the lateness of my reply

i had college work i needed to finsh so i just formatted, i was running out of time.

however, i installed xp sp2 pro, run the updates, installed office 2k3 and i installed panda software ... i done this altogether in one restart

figuring that i had used these all without problem before, i encounted critial errors i thought might have been my bios, for example my monitor wouldnt turn on, the sound card wouldnt work (with the drivers installed) etc.

im not sure why, but the problem appeared to be panda's virus scanner, i went into msconfig, disabled all services and programs starting on bootup.

the problem went away, trial and error (having very few products installed) i enabled everything apart from panda, as soon as i enabled the panda services and start up the problem occured, i uninstalled panda and havent had a problem since.

im now running the most up to date version of windows (from microsoft up date, not windows update, so it updated office aswell)

using ie 7, msn live (and msn plus)

i use several programs to keep my computer running in top performance these are

msconfig, i only allow what i want to bootup (not like javaupdate etc) i disable all that.

ccleaner is a freeware program that deleted selected registry and temporary files, i only use it to delete the temp files, u can customize which folders u want, folders like the prefetch, or i manually set it to delete my temp and temp internet files on startup.

tuneup utilities 2006, i use this to clean the registry, it seems to work effectively, and i havent had it cause a problem yet.

microsoft updates, to update all the microsoft components (saves me manually looking at there website for my microsoft mouse and keyboard drivers too)

and disk defragmenter, to keep my harddrives up (as they are my weak point) i have 2gig of ram but most of the time im waitting for the harddrives to responde

thank you for your help, it was appreciated and i only wish i had more time to fix the problem, so i could see what was causing the cli and svchost problem, as i still use all the same drivers, and so forth the only difference is i dont have panda software installed (infact i have nothing installed) :S

can you recommend a good virus scanner, that is fast... uses little memory and is effective?

Sometimes a reformat is just what the doctor ordered.

About the only thing I see you're doing 'wrong' is using MSCONFIG to block start up items. You should really use some type of bona fide start up manager such as WinPatrol v10.0.5 or Mike Lin's StartUp Control. There are many others available, just get one that has a decent rep and you can find good reviews\recommendations through forums such as this. Do not take any so called reviews from any download sites around, they can't be trusted.

I'd also add a couple more items for protection which will prevent sites from loading into IE if they are in the databases:
    IESPY ADS
    And MVPS Hosts File

In so far as an anti-virus, it really depends on how good your email security practices are. If you never, ever under any circumstances open emails from strangers and surf safely, then almost any free one will suffice. Here are a couple of the more popular ones:

And I didn't hear any mention of a firewall. XP SP 2 default firewall is inadequate. Try either of these:

    Hope thats been helpful.
