I recently tried to upgrade from XP home to XP pro on a brand new laptop. I chose the upgrade option. and followed the prompts the computer rebooted it self then started adding the files once it was done I got an error message that told me that install could not be completed and to contact my administator. Upon rebooting the maching again the 1st screen said boot from cd press enter (it was the only option) I pressed enter and I came to a screen that gave a dual boot option. Boot to Winodws XP home and and the second option which was boot to XP pro setup) the 1st option continues instalion of XP as normal while the second option gives me an error of <windowsroot>system32/cannot find hal.dll. My question is how do I get it to so that it does not try and install windows XP pro as a duel boot? and just upgrade from xp home to xp pro? I have a feeling that the answer is going to increadable simple making me feel like an idiot
couple of things to note I do not have interner to register windows for my customer. and I told it to skip the dynamic option for the non internet reason

Sorry for my incredibly poor spelling and grammer

Most Hp's or Compaqs do not come with a XP CD because there is a hidden partition containing the data to rescue your system. Did your computer come with a CD? If not you have to erase both partitions and start from scratch. I do not not think you can simply upgrade to XP Pro when there is this hidden partition on your system.
Also, if this is the case, you should have made a rescue DVD or CD's in case you have to reload windows, if you did not receive an XP Home CD.
