First, thank you for this site; having a reputable place to seek good information is greatly appreciated by us software "challenged" people.

I'm building a new computer and to the point of transferring some of my files, after installing XP Pro SP2 (forgot how much fun this was!) and drivers, etc. on the new one. I have several htm and html pages saved in the old computer, which open just fine using Firefox and the file association process in Tools > folders, etc.

The same files will not open in the new computer, and I get a message that the file is not a win32 application. I've tried the association route, and finally have the htm file associated with Firefox but not sure it's really working. However, the files will open fine if I go through Firefox - files, open file, and go to the file.

    Suggestions, experts?

Hi, Farmer2. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

I do not claim to be an expert but I try to help when I can. :)

When you go to Windows Explorer's Tools > Folder Options > File Types tab > HTM (and HTML), I am curious about the information you find after clicking the "Advanced" button.

When you highlight the "open" action and click on the "Edit..." button, please compare your information to mine:

    Action:
    open

    Application used to perform action:
    C:\PROGRA~1\MOZILL~1\FIREFOX.EXE -url "%1 "

    Use DDE: enabled

    DDE Message:
    (field is blank)

    Application:
    FIREFOX

    DDE Application Not Running:
    (field is blank)

    Topic:
    System

Thanks for the reply - my settings were the same as yours. I was experiencing corruption of XP files - wound up reinstalling OS and problems solved.

    Hi, Farmer2.

Thanks for following up. I'm glad your issue is resolved.

I hope you don't/didn't have to spend too much time after your OS reinstall to get your computer back to the way you want(ed) it. I shudder at the prospect of an OS reinstall for my machine because every time I have done so (via fresh reinstall anyway), I have had to take a few weeks to get all the software back up and running the way it used to. (I have been taking chances regarding regular hard drive backups. :) Still have to get around to purchasing an extra hard drive or two for that purpose.)
