Newcomer to this forum. Intermediate computer experience. Windows XP. Everytime I now start up my computer, I get the above error message, with a one-time noise. I can close out of the error message, and I don't notice any actual problems with my system, but I'd like to do whatever I need to, to remove/fix the problem. The error messages began after I had taken my laptop to the local wifi cafe and was working off the wireless.

    Psapi.dll

Well, I found all the PSAPI.dll files and renamed them, then went to reboot the system, and now can't get back on. "Fatal system error." Had to hire someone to come out tomorrow to clean things up for $60/hour.
From my home computer, I subsequently accessed another helpful hint that said specifically to not rename the PSAPDLL file in my \\windows\system32directory . . . and perhaps that's what I originally did, which made the system crash. If so, that would have been helpful info to have had initially. I have to say, I am kicking myself for following the advice I got here yesterday. Not impressed with the "help." Sorry to say.

Happens when you don't follow the advise given!

    The newsgroup post reads:

    To work around this error:
1.. Navigate to the installation location for SmartBridge (\Program Files\Verizon...\Smart...)
2.. Find PSAPI.DLL and rename it to something like PSAPIOLD.DLL
    3.. Reboot the system
The program will find the new PSAPI.DLL in the \Windows\System32 directory and function normally.

It doesn't say to rename them all.
