If I create a directory using filemanager or my computer under "my pictures" and copy files from other directories into the new directory they immediately become access denied. I can get ownership back by starting safe mode and taking ownership but why does this happen in the first place as I'm now in the position of not being about to create new directories without having to get ownership unless I boot up in safe mode.

    I have the follow spec:

OS Name Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition
    Version 5.1.2600 Service Pack 2 Build 2600
    OS Manufacturer Microsoft Corporation
    System Model MS-7091
    System Type X86-based PC
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~3391 Mhz
    Processor x86 Family 15 Model 3 Stepping 4 GenuineIntel ~3391 Mhz
BIOS Version/Date Phoenix Technologies, LTD 6.00 PG, 24/01/2005
    SMBIOS Version 2.3
    Windows Directory C:\WINDOWS
    System Directory C:\WINDOWS\system32
    Boot Device \Device\HarddiskVolume1
    Locale United Kingdom
    Time Zone GMT Standard Time
    Total Physical Memory 1,023.42 MB
    Available Physical Memory 308.44 MB
    Total Virtual Memory 2.00 GB
    Available Virtual Memory 1.96 GB
    Page File Space 1.66 GB
    Page File C:\pagefile.sys

    Does anyone have any ideas

Hello Bob and welcome to the Board :)

Are you creating directories (folders) under My Pictures by right clicking > new, or copying existing folders to the My Pictures folder?

What kind of files are you copying?

What action - close, rename, delete, open - causes this message?

Are you running under an admin account?

    Regards - Charles

I'm Creating a new directory whilst in the "my pictures" directory using the right mouse button. The files at the moment have been jpgs, the actions I've tried so far is renaming, deleting and trying to copy.

    Bob
And I'm using an admin account

    Hi Bob,

The problem is that the OS sees two folders with the same name, if they are open in the same session, that's what you run into.

Before trying to do anything with the new folders/files, close the source folders/files and also close the new folders in My Pictures - close the Explorer window and then open My Pictures, in other words, have no files open. Then re open My Pictures and do the action.

I've run into this on backups to an external drive where I copy folders and their contents with the original names. Before I can rename the top folder, ie, Backups + date, I have to close the original source folders on the source internal drives.

I don't use Explorer's window to copy files - I put up the from/to folders and drag and drop, so easier for me to either close the source/partition drive or the folders.

    Regards - Charles

Tried your suggestion but I still lose ownership of files if I move them to the new directory

AH, one step forward, it only seems to happen with "my pictures" I have fully taken ownership and all of its sub directories as well as files. But as soon as I have created a new directory and move/copy files to it I get the ownership issues

    Hi Bob,

Try logging on with another Admin account or XP's default Admin.
