Hello, I hope someone came across this problem?: I had scheduled my Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition (LiveUpdate) to scan almost everyday and it was fine for sometime then stopped. I then started scanning manually just as frequently and it was fine...until since a month or so ago, it just stopped doing it anymore, automatically or manually.

However, it does scan frequently, and catches daily these viruses:

    W32.Stration.D; W32.Stration.@; W32.Netsky.P

but not the LiveUpdate (or maybe it is? I don't know), and I get a msg that my LiveUpdate hasn't been updated for over 30 days.

I went to the Symantec website to scan with their LiveUpdate to clean my computer of all those bugs...but didn't find it anywhere on that site. Did they discontinue lending their scanning?

I do religiously scan the Spybot, Ad-Aware, Spyware Blaster, defrag, etc.

If anyone might know why and how to fix I'll appreciate it a lot.

    Thanks so very much! Adelita

Hi Steve and thank you. I went to the link you so kindly provided me but they don't show Manual Removal Tools saying they replaced the "extensive and tedious manual removal tasks ". The Automatic Removal Tools they show don't have at least one of the 3 viruses I caught. They are from 2000 up to Nov. 29, 2006. Do you think I could use any of those tools? Or do they have another list somewhere else?

Thanks again for your help. Adela

Adela--Some ideas concerning the NAV Live Update problem here
    http://www.google.com/search?source...6-38,GGLG:en&q=Norton+live+update+not+working
This is different from running the scan for viruses.
In the meantime, a workaround to get only the latest virus definition update is to download it from here
    http://www.symantec.com/avcenter/download/pages/US-N95.html

For problems in general, you could also try online support from Symantec

In lieu of waiting to find a tool From Symantec, might I suggest you have the machine scanned online.

    Try these:
    Panda ActiveScan
    • Click the [Scan your PC] button. ( You may have to disable any pop up blockers)
    • Then press the green [Check Now] button.
    • Enter your country and state along with a valid email address.
    • Allow the ActiveX install, it may be a few minutes for all components. (For XP SP 2 watch for the yellow bar at the top of IE)
    • Once installation is complete you will need to select a device to scan. Please select 'My Computer' and the scan will begin.
    • Once the scan is done, click the 'See report' button, then the 'save report' button. Be sure to save the log file created in a place easy for you to find.

    Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner icon.
Accept the Kaspersky agreement and the program will load.
You will then be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files. This will take a few minutes, even with hi-speed.
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next

Now click on [Scan Settings] button.
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
    Click OK

Now under the Please select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer

The program will begin the scanning process.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Then click on the [Save as Text] button
Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post for me to review.

Btw, where is Norton finding these threats, what are the file paths\locations?

Thank you armestier, I was exploring the links you gave me...but I'm kind of slow for these things, and I thought I'd try now a little more direct way with Panda? But I'll keep those very helpful websites you gave me!

    To TeMerc:
And thank you so much too! The Panda site looked a little easier than the Kaspersky? So I'll go, try it and will copy/paste the info to you.
I found them in the "Virus History" telling the entire story. About 160 of them or so. I tried to copy it to post it here but it doesn't let copying it. How can I copy them into here?

Thanks so much again to both of you! Adela

Does the virus history give a specific 'physical' location for the files found?

Such as, C:\Windows\system32\abcdef.exe or some other folder locations?

Try grabbing a screenshot of the list so we can view it.

Hi TeMerc, I already scanned Panda, and I believe I learned how to do the screenshots and hope they're ok although a little blurry I dont' know why. I also screenshot the Symantec results of caught viruses. I saved them all in 3pages of Word and I imagine I'd have to send them here as attachments? Is it permissible? Yes they have ALL the info on the viruses and files, etc. but the lists are longer and not wanting to occupy too much space here, I screenshot only to the visible length but had to make extra shots of the horizontal length. I'll wait for your answer before attaching the 3 pages. If there's a better way, I'm sorry I dont' know how to do it... Adela

If it's that long, just send a few lines of each infection found, keeping within the limits of the post, don't worry if you don't get them all, I am just wanting to get an idea.

Hi...ok about the ones caught by Symantec, I'll send only a few lines of each, although they extend horizontally a lot with about 10 or more columns. The Panda is ok on the notepad. I don't recall, what's the limit for sending an attachment?

Hi again TeMerc, I just remembered that one has to be a paid member to post an attachment and I'm going away tomorrow at 3AM for a few weeks, so I guess I won't be able to do this at this time.

Thanks so much for all your help!!! Happy Holidays and a Healthy and Prosperous New Year! :) Adela

NEW DEVELOPMENT! It's SYMANTEC that disabled the LiveUpdate button!!!
    Just in case, I have:
Full Version 2002 Symantec AV Corporate Edition # 8.00.9374
    License: 00141V-11CQ-1112
License type: Server/client gold/ (mfg only)
    Scan engine: 4.1.0.15

Hi armestier (and TeMerc), in the little time I have before leaving I tried several links you sent me, especially the last one, and step by step I got to a technician online who gave me another URL and from there to this URL (LOL!) (TeMerc, I just copied at the end here, one caught virus with ALL info, these popup from time to time, though we may need now a different approach?)) :

    http://www.symantec.com/enterprise/support/knowledge_base.jsp?searchText=The+LiveUpdate+button+not+responding&pid=51852

It seems I'm one of the "restricted users "!!! THIS, is news to me, and it gives directions to make it work but...only a manager or similar person can do it. It's just as well since I can't understand all that mumbo jumbo...could one of you technically inclined help me with this please? (For instance, what's this Domino server???) When you click the long URL above, it will show more options like the one below but I don't know if they apply to me. Thanks ever so much!

Restricted users cannot run LiveUpdate under Windows 2003/XP/2000
    The LiveUpdate button is disabled.

Well seeing as you're running a corp edition of Symantec, I'll guess that you are in a work environment and perhaps your IT dept has set things up in that manner. Let me know if it is other wise.

Regardless of which, we need to get a HiJackThis! log file so we can see what else may be on your machine.

Please do as instructed below, and post info when you return, if you are going on leave.

    HiJackThis v:1.99.1zip.
DL the zip file to your desktop, then create a new folder on your C drive, called 'HJT' or 'HijackThis'. Then unzip the files to the new folder. When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Run the program, and press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Save the log and Post that log onto this topic. DO NOT DELETE or modify anything yet, as some of it is needed to keep your system in proper working order.

No, TeMerc, I'm only an independent individual, no company or not in a network environment, I wish...The last techi I had installed this thing without consulting and charged me too much, and I just found out that I can't run Norton's Intelligent Scan which does the same as LiveUpdate because it is only for the Norton and not for the Symantec...among other headaches, like I just realized he never gave me the serial #, etc., which was required somewhere on Symantec's site. I called him but he's not interested! Oh well... I don't know WHEN I'll learn to detect the cheaters!
Thank you for the new tests, it sounds a little too complicated for me and I'm running out of time, but I'll do what I can and if not, may I continue in January when I return? (What is "DL "?)

Meantime, I wish you the best for the Holidays and the New Year, with my gratitude! :) Adela
