In another section I have been advised to come here & ask for help since the log of HijackThis is, to me, inscrutable. Since installing IE 7 (before, I had trouble-free IE6), I have been getting pop-unders(?) from thewhir.com and vonage.com even though they are on my restricted list. The poppng windows do no harm that I can tell except causing me to have to click them away after exiting IE. I run XP Pro, mostly in the non-administrative account. I run Webroot Spysweeper, Sunbelt Software Counterspy, and CA EZ AntiVirus. Have run recent scans (30 to 50 minutes each) with no severe problems discovered. Advice given me to run HijackThis has resulted in the following log, for whose length I apologize:

Hi and welcome to the forum.

I just visited both of those sites, and did not get a pop up at all. I'm running IE7, Google toolbar w\pop up blocker activated along with Paniceware Free Pop Up Stopper. Not to mention of course the XP SP2 pop up stopper. I'd suggest perhaps installing one of the two beyond the XP SP 2 one for advanced pop up prevention.

You HJT log is clean, save for a few minor non-default IE settings, which we can fix.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://www.dell4me.com/myway

    R1 - HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Bar = http://www.comcast.net/toolbar2.0/search/

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Page_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Default_Search_URL = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896

    R1 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Search Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=54896

    R0 - HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main,Start Page = http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?LinkId=69157

Reboot, run HJT, if the above are gone, no need to repost with new log.

TeMerc--Thanks for your replt. I have done as you suggested at least three times in each of my Win XP "accounts ", both the administrative and the non-administrative. BTW, there seems to be a misunderstanding about what the popoup/under is. The sites I cited are not those at which popups/unders occur; they ARE the pops. They, and now also, a2zmall.net occur under visits to links to messages in http://b4.boards2go.com/boards.cgi?user=willyaye2, a college class BB. The pops do not occur during vists while in my administrative account, just the supposedly safer non-admin one. Also, the logfile I printed above was from a HijackThis fully normal run in the non-admin account. Today I get messages in the non-admin account that HijackThis (HT in future) is denied access to hosts files & I should send an email to the HT author. In spite of the message, HT runs normallyafterward. In my admin account, the first line you told me to "Fix" did not exist, and the others would recur after fixing and rebooting. In the non-admin account I was able to "Fix" the first line, but not the others. The logfile from the last non-admin account run of HT is:

You may need to disable both SpySweeper and CounterSpy to get the HJT changes to stick, they may be restoring them based on what they have in their settings.

In so far as the hosts file glitch, I'm not sure why you would get that, I've not had anyone ever get that before, perhaps its related to LUA account.

So these two sites you mentioned, along with the latest one pop up when randomly surfing? And they are in full IE windows?

Do you have Windows Messenger turned off\disabled? Maybe this is messenger spam.

TeMerc--I have finally epunged the keys you recommended. It DID take disabling Counterspy and Spy Sweeper, and I had to do the job in both the admin & non-admin accounts. The problem remains unchanged. I have asked the webmaster of the (free) BB if he has any suggestions. Perhaps this is a clue: I put the homepage of the BB on my "Trusted" list; on the other hand, the page of the BB that holds the index to threads is of a different URL than the homepage, so that doesn't seem right. BTW, the messages from HijackThis about not having access to the hosts file probably resulted from my being in the non-admin account. Agai, onthe other hand, HT did complete the san after the messages were clicked off.
