I have a Gateway 400VTX Laptop with windows xp home edition , has a 2 GHz Pentium 4 processor, and has 248MB of RAM.. I have had this computer for 4 years and is usually worked fine until a few months ago it started going slow. When i started the computer it goes to desktop but there are no icons there and only the wallpaper shows. It stays like that for 4 minutes. After that the icons show but the wallpaper doesn't and it stays like that for 2 minutes. Also when I open up programs it usually takes awhile to open. I have run Checkdisk, Disk defragmentor, and the virus scan but that does not solve the problem. My hard drive has 59% free space. I don't know if this may help but I check in dxdiag that there is 356 MB used for Page File.

I'll post a HJT file just in case something is there.

Merlinone, you do not have enough RAM for the number of processes running. There are 40 + processes running and I can't see that many user applications have been started. All those 04 items are being loaded at startup, the slowness will be that the RAM is filled then the programs need to written to pagefile. The programs need to be read from the harddrive, then the process cannot reside in the physical memory so it is written back to the drive as pagefile. I would also suspect that Norton Antivirus is running checks at the same time. Watch the harddisk LED, it will be flashing the whole time during that startup.

What are your options? 248Mb of RAM does not seem to even hold your background programs. If you can add 256Mb of RAM most of that will still be taken up with background programs  I would suggest you add an additional 512Mb of RAM (for the size it should work out as more economical anyway). This is the memory information for your machine:
If you add 512Mb you will have 760 of available physical memory.

You could just leave it that way, but all those background programs will still be need to be loaded into the memory each startup. Look at reducing the startup load. Probably 80% of those startup items could be disabled depending on what programs are important for you.
Put the names of the .exe files listed with 04 heading into a Google search, find out what they are, what they do and what what people think about them running in the background. Look at turning them off by using the Tools -> Options or Configuration menu within the main program, using msconfig to disable them or if they don't have an option, disable them with Hijack This. Uninstall things you don't really use although some of those "legitimate" programs I think you will find are very hard to uninstall. Don't install "toolbars" if you don't really need them. There are several media players running programs...etc, etc  [Also, these are going to run your battery down when you are not running on mains power.]

We could go into "You should turn such and such off ", but it will be better for you to find out for yourself, then you will know the reason behind it. Almost every program you install nowadays expects that you have excessive RAM and will install all it's tools and updaters unless you take steps to avoid it. 248Mb is not enough for many of those.

    Matt

Your comp also has spyware which will definitely cause noticable slows on the Internet. Use HjT to Fix:

    I don't know how I missed this...sorry about that.

Below you will find my results and recommendations from your HijackThis! log file analysis. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

As mentioned, you do have a lot of running processes, some of which you can disable for sure. The iWon app is not likely helping either.

Altho your speed may not be slow due to what you have for RAM. I'm currently running 256 as well, and have 44 processes live and active, and my machine starts up pretty quickly, less than a minute and I have about 10-15 'extras' that I like to run too.

You may want to trim some of the unnecessary components from starting. Here is an excellent site for that:
    AnswersThatWork
Just go to the appropriate letter, and search for the process/exe, they will give good detailed info regarding it, we use it quite often. If you can't find it there, then use Google.

    Now, onto your log.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed
    iWon
    Viewpoint
<<-Stealth DL, bundled with AOL AIM. Used for online game playing. AIM still operational after removal. Will re-install with AIM update.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

I need clarification, is the file you're getting the error with ccSvcHst.exe or ccsvchost.exe.

The first one supposedly Symantec has issued a patch for and the other one, I can't find much relevant info on.

And btw, nothing we did would have affected Norton at all.

it was the ccSvcHst.exe but the problem is gone now. The startup is still slow. I was thinking of putting in some extra RAM. I still have two chips I have from my desktop computer that I dont use anymore. Both of them are 128MB DDR 266MHz CL2.5. Could I use these chips or should i buy a new chip?

    I also need help

When you have finished fixing the problem above, I also need some serious help. I know I have heaps of stuff running in the background, but I am hesitant to stop anything. I also have loads of $NtUninstall...$ files under C:\Windows. I took a chance and manually deleted the $NtServicePackUninstall$ via Explorer as I could not find it on Add/Remove Programs. I hope I have not done too much damage. Look forward to hearing from someone

Glad to hear the problem is solved.

No, chips from a desktop cannot be used in a lap top, different types of chips.

You'll have to buy more of the same type of RAM sticks that are in the lap top already.

    Welcome to the forums Ethne.

We'll need to split off your topic into its own subject.

Those files you deleted would not impact any CPU, just some space. They were uninstallers from all the windows updates, not a problem unless you need to uninstall them.

To determine what needs to be running and eliminate the extras you may want to trim some of the unnecessary components from starting. Here is an excellent site for that:

Just go to the appropriate letter, and search for the process/exe, they will give good detailed info regarding it, we use it quite often. If you can't find it there, then use Google.

    here's your laptop specs:
    http://support.gateway.com/s/Mobile/Gateway/400VTX/3501331sp47.shtml
it will support up to 1 GB of ram, I suggest maxing it out, you will not be sorry. Remember, your video is sharing that ram too, the comp does not have separate video memory.
