After twice setting a website (thewhir.com) into the Restricted Site list, it still gets popped under a site I am watching. I also have pop-up blocker activated. DO I misunderstand what a pop-up is? The last time (about the fourth since installing IE7) a Vonage site popped under. This is only an inconvenience, but "is a puzzlement. "

Pete, I put "thewhir.com" in my restricted sites for IE7 and went to the site. I got the site with a notice in the status bar that it is a restricted site and a privacy report that said several cookies were blocked. I get no popups at all. I have the popup blocker in IE turned off and the one in Google turned on.

    IE7 Security Anomaly

Thanks for your post, but I still don't know what to do to stop these sites from popping (up/under--whatever). I don't visit them, they just occur. It doesn't seem to me that one should have to buy a blocker if IE7 has one. ???

Do you use the usual programs for anti spyware? I'm talking about AdAware and Spybot S&D and Windows defender.

You could have malware on your computer and you need to get rid of it.

You have malware in your system already that's causing the popups.

    Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99.1

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis

unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

click on Do a system scan and save a logfile and save to the folder you just created

Open a thread in the Virus/Spyware Removal section and copy resultant .txt file and paste into your post.

    Regards - Charles

Thaks for both replies. Yes, I run anti-spyware apps, Conterspy, Spysweeper, and CA's antiVirus. I've used Adaware & Spybot in the past with poor & very frustrating results. Those seem to be set up to put one in a state of alarm but not of confidence about what to do. The warnings are always ambiguous (messages like "this may be spyware, but be careful, it may be essential to your system "). No scan (and they take 30 to 50 minutes) has found a really bad spy prgrm. I've also in the past used the rootkit eradicator that was offered at one time, but it found nothing, an that was before installing IE7. Didn't have this minor problem with IE6. The "popups" seem to occur when I'm on a bravenet BB. I allow their cookie, but only theirs & stamps.com.
