I have Windows Server 2003 R2 installed on my C drive. I want to install Vista on the D but want to make sure that will not ***** up my Windows 2003 boot.
If I now install Vista on my D will I have to run the repair to get my Windows 2003 Server running or will Vista just be added to the boot menu when I boot up the PC. I would like to see
    Windows 2003 Server
    Vista
    then make my selection.
I never can remember which order I should install but I have the Server setup just the way I want and do not want to have to redo it.

    TIA

If you don’t have an image of 2003 and are not versed in restoring it, then you are taking a risk in messing with your system. If all goes at it should with the Vista install then what you propose should work fine. Vista will install its boot files inside 2003 and set up the boot menu for you. It’s when you come to remove Vista that you will have to repair the 2003 boot routine.

The new Vista bootmanager operates in virtually the same fashion as the ntldr does, just with different files. For an excellent explanation of how the windows boot manager works see here. http://www.goodells.net/multiboot/principles.htm If you want to avoid the Windows bootmanager and keep Vista away from 2003 then try this. http://www.multibooters.co.uk
