    Hi there

I have just brought a 320GB SATA2 hard drive (WD3200KS) and wish to use this as my operating system. I thought I would connect it up and use Nortons Ghost to transfer everything from the IDE drive to the new SATA drive, then I could format the IDE drive and use as storage.

The Problem is XPSP2 does not see the drive in device manager.
This is what I have done
    - Enabled SATA in BIOS
    - Changed boot order so 3rd boot is SCSI
    - Installed driver from Mobo manufactures (Albatron PM800 V2) CD (this comes up with raid, but am not using raid of any sort)

Windows will not see the drive still. I removed the IDE drive and proceeded to install windows straight to SATA drive rather than ghosting but windows CD did not see the drive either.

The SATA drive is SATA2 (300mb/s) and my Mobo only supports SATA(150mb/s), do you think this could be the problem? or is there something else
    I am doing wrong here

    Your time is much appreciated

    Cheers

    Matt

You must load the SATA drivers - F6 (I think) early in the XP install process. Your Ghost image (IDE) does not contain the SATA drivers.

    Thanks for reply

Thanks for the reply Pete, I tried that but still didnt reconise the drive. It has a jumper to take it from SATA2(300mb/s) to SATA(150mb/s), so I might try that when I get home.

    Any other suggestions

    Matt

Sounds a good idea - clearly not backwards compatible as USB 2 > 1

    Albatron PM800 SATA Issue

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

i'm building two identical systems - except one has a PM800 Pro and the other a PM800 Pro 2.

i am having the same trouble with both - when the data cables are connected to the SATA drives the drives will not power up. when the data cables are disconnected the SATA drives power up fine.

i have changed cables but obvuiously this is a different problem if it is happening with two systems.

the SATA drives are Western Digital 40GB drives.

i would welcome any input into this fault - i have found the following which may explain it but am having trouble verifying the exact drive specs:

Albatron PM800 Pro 1.0 & 2.0 - Will not work with SATA hard drives that are SATA 2 standard or have NCQ capabilities at the moment like the new current Seagate SATA hard drives. Some issue with the VIA chipset.

    Cheers!

the wd website should detail what specs those drives are. obviously, update your bios and chipset & board drivers.

    Re: Albatron PM800 SATA Issue

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

the WD website is actually quite vague on these matters

also i am loathe to perform bios updates on boards that are part of a "kit" - i presume any vendor selling a package deal would ideally have confirmed that all the componentry is compatible...

i have installed the machines successfully on a couple of IDE drives i had lying around so I may have to wait until the working week starts before venting at my hardware vendor!

    }8)

    Fixed!

The drives require a jumper to be placed on OPT1 which allows them to run on these motherboards.

The PRO 2 version of the P800 also requries a sata/raid driver to be loaded during a Windows XP install. The files supplied on the motherboard cd are lacking one (viamraid.cat) but this is available from:
