Is it possible to downgrade from XP 64bit o/s to XP 32bit? Even if the bus is 64bit?

I would think only by reformatting or installing dual boot. I have run x64 and x32 Pro on the same computer.

I've heard from the manufacturer, both answers, yes and no. If the bus is 64bit, would a format and install of 32bit o/s work?

As I recall, the 64 bit require a fresh install....And yes, the 32bit software should work fine.

Not exactly sure what you mean here, but the only way you can 'downgrade' from Windows XP Pro x64 to the 32-bit version is to do a clean install of the 32-bit version.

And yes, you can install the 32-bit version on 64-bit hardware.

Thank you Arie. I was actually awaiting to read your reply. Since I've joined, your replies have been tops.....right on target and interesting to read.

My main question was: Can XP o/s 32bit run on a pc w/XP 64bit bus? I've read many articles with both answers; yes and no. Even after calling the pc manufacturer, their instructions were both; yes and no.

I plan on performing a clean install by formatting a new hdd, and installing the 32bit XP o/s. If you have suggestions, they are more than welcomed.

    Thank you again..;)

The no is true for Intel Itanium Server processors. The Itanium is not compatible with software designed for standard x86-based computers.

It could be that today's Itanium processors are compatible, haven't looked into it recently, but the 1st Itaniums definitely where not compatible.

    64bit bus w/32bit o/s--works

WOW-it's been a long and rough road. The PC is up and running--finally!

With no help from the manufacturer. The pc was shipped with 64bit cd drivers. Had to call, go on line, search and install 3 most important drivers. Worst was the Network NIC! Catch 22!! Cannot go on line with out Network--Cannot install network without going on line to get driver. Interesting.

It seems to be running a bit faster except when trying to configure any part of the network. Any ideas?

    NIC Drivers

According to HP it is. I downloaded the driver from Broadcom website. It has been working except when accessing any protocol of the network properties. The properties in the device manager seem ok. Surfing the network is ok also and any shares that the user may need to access is ok also. All the devices are integrated onto the motherboard and the cd's that came with the pc were for 64bit only. Did not work on the 32bit o/s. Long Road.

I guess you can close this thread now. All's calm in the South---pc atleast...;)

Now onto Vista!!!...;( Any "behind the scene" tips would be greatly appreciated...;)
