    Hello,

Wondering if anyone can help with this problem. Am trying to help a friend sort out a PC she has been given second-hand. I would like the reinstall Windows XP using a cd (as the current version apparently has bugs) but the only problem is the Cd/Dvd-ROM drive is not being detected at all!

The only drives detected are the C: drive, D: drive (the former owner had a second hard drive which is now gone) and A: drive. The physical mechanism is working fine, but that is as far as it gets. I have tried uninstalling the D: driver (in case it is this drive that is causing the trouble), but after rebooting nothing seemed to have changed as the D: drive is till showing up.

To complicate things further, it is a German version of XP so pretty tricky to follow for a non-speaker!

    Any suggestions much appreciated.

    Thanks.

    Pete,

Unfortunately I have had no luck with the fix you suggested. I removed the data values but to no effect!

If you (or anyone else) has any further suggestions they would be much appreciated.

    Thanks again.

Have you checked the ribbon cable to the rear of the drive and to the motherboard - unplug and reseat at both ends.

With the second hard drive gone Windows should recognise the CD as D:

Take a look in the BIOS and see if the CD drive is being recognised there.

Look for a menu in the BIOS settings Autodetect Hard Disk Drives. Run that and you will need to be careful that the settings are saved.

At some stage in the boot process there should be a "configuration screen ", it is a listing of the hardware that is loaded by the BIOS. You should be able to hit the Pause key to stop the screens and read it. Press Enter/Pause/Enter/Pause to read the screens one at a time.
