Me and a friend are trying to get Xp Home on his computer. We bought a new 100gb hardrive, and today we bought the new OS. So we try to install it and after we agree to the terms it comes up with a screen saying to insert the cd and press enter. So the CD is already in and i hit enter. Brings us to a screen saying how it's not the right disk, to insert the right one. Now what?

To me it sounds like you are using an upgrade version of Win XP and it is asking you to insert the CD of your previous version of Windows. Check the box that Windows came in, if it says Upgrade you will need to put the previous version CD in the drive (a licensed version of Win 98, Win 98SE or Win ME).

But there's no way I can do that. His old harddrive became a victim to viruses and worms, so we threw away that and got a Seagate 100 gb harddrive. Also he used to have XP on his old computer, and if it was XP Pro, does that mean I can't change it to Home?

    Hello highscore2600,

If you don't have the cd for the particular OS mentioned by Matt, a borrowed one will do.

Borrowed? No one has any. I bought the installation disk, why won't this work? 100 bucks for it and it better!

I think you are missing the point here ...

Did you buy a Full copy of XP Home or and Upgrade to XP Home? or maybe you bought an OEM disk which may only install on a given set of hardware?

If you bought an Upgrade CD for which you paid less than you would have done for a full version on the basis that you already had a full copy of the previous OS (Win 98, Win Me - you cannot upgrade Pro to Home) the upgrade process will ask for evidence of prior ownership of a qualifying MS Operating System as Matt posted and you will need to insert the CD for that OS at the prompt you see to allow the upgrade to proceed.

As Charles posted any full copy of 98 or Me will do regardless of whether or not you are the actual owner of the CD - hence Charles' post of 'a borrowed one will do'.

Until we can clear up exactly which type of CD you are trying to install - Upgrade or Full - look on the box and on the CD we cannot help you further.

    highscore2600, FYI,

The $100 US sounds like an upgrade version of XP. The "upgrade" XP is a stand alone version of the OS, meaning it will install on an empty drive, it just needs that qualifying media - meaning a 98 etc cd to be inserted, and then the installation will proceed.

This applies to a retail environment purchase - legitimate mail order, or retail store, or from the OEM of the computer you're trying to install the OS on.
Do you have the XP install disc for the original version that was on the HD? If it was an OS reinstalltion disc and not a back to factory settings restore disc, that can also be used as "qualifying" media or can be installed on the new HD.
    Pete answered that one.

    Regards - Charles

You bought an Upgrade version. You are not entitled to an upgrade if you do not own a previous version.

The full version sells for $199.- (XP Home).
