I am running XP Pro 64 bit , and suffering hangs and freezes in several different programmes ( IE7, MS Outlook, Start menu etc ). I have just done a defrag , and cleared internet history , but no different.
Error reporting frequently brings a message saying that Symantec Corp. know of this problem and think it is due to something in WinFax Pro , and I am referred to them for help.
I don't think I have actually got WinFax Pro (installed) since Search can't find it.
These messages come up in Netscape, which I don't use, and the link from that Netscape page does not work.
When I get to Symantec via a search engine I can't find any offer of download or help or support or contact , except for ones where I have to put in an order number before I get further forward.

What are you doing when the error pops up?
What exactly does the error message say?

When I get these freezes I use Task Manager and attempt to end the programme(s) marked "not responding" and after some attempts the box "report this problem to Windows" pops up . I do , and after the message is sent , I sometimes get this message saying ( sorry I did not note it down exactly) that Symantec are aware of a problem/conflict involving WinFax Pro and if I go to them they may have the answer...
    I am not using WinFax - I don't send faxes !

The freezes are difficult to pinpoint ; I use Microsoft Office Outlook 2003 all the time for e-mail and calendar/diary reminders , and some of the freezes are there. I use IE7 for internet , and Photoshop 9 a lot. Recently I have been using Macromedia Dreamweaver. At times I have had freezes in all of these, but with no clear pattern.
When the Symantec page pops up ( automatically) by following the link from the Error report , it is in Netscape browser. This was installed automatically with Dreamweaver ( so as to check new pages in different browsers). I don't like it, prefer IE , and have uninstalled it - but it is still used for these automatic pop-ups - maybe because it is Netscape navigator I have uninstalled, and not Netscape Communicator ( where I had difficulty in my unsuccesful attempts to uninstall).

Had another freeze today , when looking in Recycle bin, with nothing else open !
Looked in Task Manager , noted that CPU usage was 100% ( as it always seems to be when I get a freeze - its logical to assume a connection ! )
This time I also looked on the Processes tab , and noted that the culprit was "ebay.TDaemon.exe " taking 99% ( not sure about the terminiation as I did not note it down before going further ) - which I assume to be some piece of spyware , so I stopped it - and cured the problem for this time anyway.
I have been trying to run my spyware but it seems corrupt, but will have another go now.

I have had several goes at the virus scanner you suggested , but never managed to make it work . I get told I need extra things installed, seem to install them, and just go round in circles. Even when I thought the scan was working ( twice) , because a tiny window had a symbol rather like the disc rorttating symbol Mac use, I left it for 1 hour the first time and 3 hours later, with no viosible change at all.
I have ,however, found that my PC Tools Spyware programme had stopped working , re-installed, and ran it - and removed two possibly serious infections, so I'll rest here - and hope the problems are cured ( until the next time , of course ! )
    Thanks for help.

    Outlook/Winfax errors

I am having the same problem. I'm not near that pc for awhile, but did read on another forum that it sometimes helps to go into TOOLS / OPTIONS and 'unselect' the live messenger update. I'll be looking for that.

Error message refers to WinFax Pro Reply to Thread

I have not , in fact , had that same error message about WinFax Pro lately , but the annoying freezing returns periodically.
My latest discovery , using Windows Task Manager, is that an ebay file was responsible for 99% of the CPU usage at times of freeze ( found this on the Processes tab) - and I guess that this is a piece of spyware - since I have used e-bay very occasionally. I could not find the file location with Search - even when looking for hidden files, but explored the Program folder in my Computer on my C drive, found e-bay , and deleted the lot.
So far my computer is flying faster than I can remember.

Thanks Geoff. I had MSN Instant Messenger running on my toolbar and disabled it, and have not had a 'hang' yet. I'll keep your note though, because I've had the same exerience with CPU usage being 100% because of the Ebay file you found. It I have more trouble, that's where I'll go next. Appreciate it. /Butch

I've had this problem as recently as today. I find the freezes happen when I click on an email message to read it or a link in a message (such as to go to a message board post) and Outlook 2003 starts "synchronizing folders" at exactly the same time as I click. Very annoying! And I am NOT using any Symantec products. At all. I've completed the survey three times but it doesn't seem to have helped.

    Error message refers to WinFax

I have not had that Winfax message for some days/weeks now , and it occurs to me that it was always associated with the use of one particular browser (Netscape) which I only acquired so as to be able to try out a web-page I have been building ( try it out on several different browsers , to make sure it looks OK on all of them). I think it was an old version of Netscape, and I had several goes at updating that programme, on one occasion leaving the download (apparently) running for an hour or more - ridiculous on a supposed 2Mb broadband connection ! The absence of WinFax error messages coincides with my deletion/uninstallation of Netscape . Of course this may be a misleading coincidence.
But, Meli , I suggest you try looking at Task Manager when you get a freeze - it will at least tell you what is occupying all your CPU , and you may get some interesting ideas following up other lines from this.

Thanks Geoff, but I'm still getting the freeze. 99% of the time I'm using IE7, I have all updates and patches to my software, and even today I got the WinFax Pro error solution message. I'm just going to stop telling Microsoft about the errors.

I will try to see which process is spiking when the freeze occurs, and post back what I find.
