My home built XP SP2 unit was running just fine, no issues at all. I installed an Athlon XP2200+ powered the unit and after the desktop loaded a message appeared that read, " system has just recovered from a serious error ". Then about a hour later my screen saver initialized and when I went to login I rec'd just the hour glass and had to reboot.Shortly thereafter I closed Outlook and the unit rebooted on it's own. I checked Microsoft's website and read article Q322205 which states after installing new hardware your system may restart spontaneously due to a device driver. Any input? I've removed the CPU and installed my Athlon until I can determine exaxtly what occured. Unit is back to normal with original CPU.
    Thank you

Try a Windows XP Repair Install with the new CPU in place.

Boot from the WinXP CD (you may have to change a setting in your BIOS that allows you to boot from the CD). Do not choose the option to repair an XP installation using Recovery Console when prompted, choose the option to To set up Windows XP now press ENTER.

After more files have been copied, you'll get another selection screen where you should select the current XP installation, & the option To Repair the selected Windows XP installation, press R.
