IE 7 hanging up a lot and crashing a lot

I downloaded IE 7 a few days ago, and I'm not happy with it at all. I do like the tab feature, but it gets hung up on a regular basis, and I have to use the Windows Task Manager to close all my windows and tabs, and it takes forever. It's driving me crazy. Is this some kind of problem I can fix, or is it just a bug in IE 7? Between that and IE 7 crashing on me and closing all my open windows, I don't think I can tolerate using IE 7 for long.

Also, if I end up uninstalling IE 7, will IE 6 still work normally? Is it necessary to have IE 7 installed, or is it just a personal choice? Thanks.

Whoops, I forgot to mention that I have a brand new Compaq Presario computer, model SR2027X. It's been set up and running for one week. It has Windows XP Media Center edition 2005 on it.

You can uninstal IE 7 through Add/Remove programs - it should be listed as Windows Internet Explorer 7 - and revert back to IE 6.

Your problems may have arisen through the way in which you installed IE 7 - the recommended method is posted here ....

    http://msmvps.com/blogs/spywaresucks/archive/2006/10/18/182724.aspx See Before installing IE7

IE 7 is not a requirement with XP - it is an option. In Vista IE 7 is part of the OS and I doubt it can be removed or that IE 6 would function in it.

IE 7 is streets ahead of IE 6 in terms of security and for that reason it's use is recommended. I have run IE 7 without problems from the beta stage through RC1 and now Final.

Thanks for your reply. I downloaded IE 7 from the Microsoft site as a Windows update, so is that different from what you recommend? I followed your link and it ultimately takes me to the Microsoft site.

Should I uninstall it, then redownload and install it from the site your link takes me to? Do you think that would help? Thanks.

The author of the site I posted was closely involved in the development of IE 7 and her advice is clearly sound. The installation procedure outlined is somewhat different from that of Microsoft Update.

Give IE 7 another chance :) - Download it from here and save to your hard disk ....

    http://www.microsoft.com/windows/ie/downloads/default.mspx

Uninstall your current copy of IE 7 to return to IE 6 - confirm that it functions as expected, then install IE 7 from your download following the instructions posted in the url in my last post to the letter. You cannot do better than that :)

    Okay.

How do you set a restore point? And how do you turn off automatic updates? (These were part of the instructions at the URL you posted.)
    Thanks.

Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore and follow the wizard through. (Create a restore point > Next ....)
Control Panel > Security Center > Manage Security Settings for > Automatic Updates and set to Turn off Automatic Updates. (Remember to reset to Automatic or notify, etc when you have done).

Okay, I'll try that. But first a few more questions. I have the program CCCleaner that cleans the registry, etc. It also has an uninstaller for all programs on my comuter. When I uninstall IE 7, should I use that or should I use the Windows uninstaller? And is there any special way to uninstall that I need to know about? Do I need to close all running programs and windows/tabs before uninstalling?

Regarding the download, that is totally different from the install, isn't it? Do I have to download in a special way? Seems I read somewhere that I should disable my download manager (Free Download Manager) and not use that to download. But now I can't remember where I read that or find it again. (I hate it when that happens :) ) Do you know anything about that?

Thanks. Sorry about so many questions, but..............if I do this I want to do it right.

Close down all open Windows and remove IE 7 through Add/Remove Programs which should always be the preferred route whatever the program. CClearner no doubt makes the same call to the program uninstaller, but there are some aspects of CCleaner which I am not comfortable with and I would certainly not use it for registry maintenance. If you want to clean the registry, which really is best left alone unless you have specific problems, I suggest the use of RegSeeker or jv16PowerTools - the first is freeware and has established a good reputation, the second is a suite of tools - a trial is available.

The download and install are not the same - Windows Update downloads the file to a temporary location on your hard drive and then installs it. From the download URL I posted you make a permanent download of the installation file to your hard drive and run it at your leisure. Windows update will not install IE 7 in the manner suggested in the url I posted, which outlines the best way if problems are to be avioded.

When you click on download you receive a dialogue box with the options Run or Save - select Save and in the Save dialogue box which opens select a location. It would be wise to disable your download manager - some downloads specifically request that action - I don't know about this one, but best to disable it anyway.

Hi again. Well, I did everything you suggested the way it said to, and now I have IE 7 installed for the second time. I didn't really have any problems doing it. The question is, did it fix the problems I was having with my first IE 7 install? Well, I can't answer that yet, but so far so good. Hopefully everything is fixed and it will work well like IE 6 did.

I appreciate your help, and couldn't have done it without your advice. Thanks a lot. If I do have problems with it I'll post here again.

Oh, I forgot to ask, what is not good with CCCleaner? Just interested in your opinion about it and what you know about it. I don't want to do anything unwise to ***** up my brand new computer. Thanks.

Well, I don't think reinstalling IE 7 did much good to fix the problems I was having. Whenever I close an open tab by clicking on the X, all of my windows immediately close. I look down at the task bar, and all IE windows are gone, just like that. (It incenses me when that happens, BTW.) Then when I'm done with my computer and ready to turn it off, I right click on the windows thing in the task bar, and click close group, and then the box pops up about closing the tabs, and I click close tabs. Nothing happens for a while, then the box pops up about how IE has to close, sorry for the inconvenience, yadi, yadi. Thats not such a big deal since I'm trying to close my windows at that time, but apparently the close tab thing is not working right, and that bothers me.

These are two of the problems I was having with the first IE 7 install. So reinstalling hasn't corrected these. What are my options now? If this continues, and I can't have IE 7 work properly on my brand new computer, I may have to go back to IE 6, because I can't envision dealing with these problems on a daily basis. I don't think I have the patience for that. And, I don't think I should have to. I'm very irritated with Microsoft for putting IE 7 out there for the public to use, if it isn't going to work properly on most computers. I think a lot of people are very frustrated with it, judging from the forums. To me, it feels like a faulty product, and anyone who uses the net needs a good, dependable browser. And a security safe browser.

What do you think of the Firefox browser? Is it as security safe as IE 7 supposedly is? Does it cause the kind of problems IE 7 does? What other browser would you suggest, if I can't get IE 7 to work properly?

    Thanks.

I can well understand your frustration with IE 7 - and you are not alone, but I cannot pretend that I have any answers for you.

You asked if Firefox was a viable alternative - I think so. I use both IE 7 and Firefox and have no problems with either, but I am not taking sides :)

For questions on Firefox post in the Netscape & Mozilla forum where Ramona will suerly give you her best attention.

What am I not comfortable with in CCleaner? I have used it regularly in the past to clean up the .dat files in IE, but the latest release seemed to clear other things as well and caused me a few problems and I am convinced that it was not user error :)

I would not use the registry cleaner at all, not that I have experience of it, but I prefer to use those cleaners with a pedigree, sparingly, as I posted.

I have yet to see regular cleaning of the registry deliver a noticeable increase in performance. Just my take on this :)

Perhaps it's an add-on of some type that's causing the problem. Have you tried running IE without any add-ons? If not, you might want to give it a try. To do so, click start>run>accessories>system tools> internet explorer (no add_ons). If it runs that way without problems it would point to some sort of add-on causing it. Perhaps a toolbar of some type or some other type of IE helper program.
