I have Win 98SE and have happily used IE 5.01 for a long time (56k dial-up). Recently something has changed. Often when a page is loading up the computer will lock me out of doing anything (curser changes to small vertical line with a pointer at each end). I will then have to wait until the page is fully loaded (or maybe just a particular part of the page) before it releases the screen back to my control. I am not positive but a recent MS Security Update (Q314147) may be at fault (no uninstall provision given). It makes browsing NOT fun. :(

Any ideas on how to get back control of IE?

Should I try IE repair, or should I uninstall 5.01 and reinstall? Thx

    Hi LarryB
Can you give us some system specs please?
Also? Have you been through msconfig and unchecked all unneccessary apps from loading at start up?

    Hi Daizy,

    I have an Asus CUSL-2 mobo, 512K Ram, 80GB HDD/ATA100-133, Win98SE, Kitchenaid Dishwasher (oops), 56k dial-up and IE 5.01.

Can't think of anything else to tell ya.

I assume that you suggest msconfig to see if any of those apps are causing this instead of the IE security update that I mentioned?

    :D Yep
First thing I get people to check when they're suffering freezing is their startup folder under msconfig. Well...that and telling them to scrap their KitchenAid for a Maytag! ;)
If you're convinced it's the update, then how about using a scanreg /restore?
Just for grins and giggles? Do a fresh boot...then a ctrl/alt/del and list for us what is in the close programs dialogue box?

An excellent judge of character and a fast learner :D

Maybe some basic housekeeping will do the trick - clean out your temporary files, defrag and scandisk.

Ohhhhh can ya feel the love? :D

Uncheck the pop up killer and adsubtract for a bit as well. See if that makes any difference.

As a matter of fact......I'd be unchecking down to the barest necessities......

I have been really and also just tired of *&(=@ with my computer. Sorry about the delay on the reply.

This slowing down and dying thing while in the net..... While slowing down I have tried to use close programs and close everything that is not essential while carousing on the net (Systray, Explorer, 3comwlk,rnaapp, em_exec (mouse), IE) and no improvement noted.

I did ck out the many wonderful suggestions (esp those 10) and tried the applicable ones with no change. Sadly, when it finally grinds to a halt, I get a new line in Close Programs that says msgsrv(not responding). I have learned that that doesn't tell one much. My resources are all fine during this slowing down, BTW.

The MS articles really did not apply to this situation.

If you are as tired  of this as I am, your ignoring me would be understandable. LarryB
