I recieved this friends computer a few days ago which was running slow and probably had spyware/virus and such. My original intentions was to reinstall windows home on this system after repartitioning and formating the system.

Boy was i wrong. I formatted the system and used the xp home cd to reinstall xp. After the final restart thats part of the install i got a BSOD (Stop 0x0000007f). I tried different Ram, different video card, tested the HD using the maxtor utility and everything tests ok. As a last resort i even tried another copy of XP.
Intresting thing was that it originally was booting and operating but very slow.

I can access the system using safe mode but nothing else. I have even flashed the motherboard bios to the latest version.

Here are the minidumps maybe someone can help me out, thanks.

    UNEXPECTED_KERNEL_MODE_TRAP (7f)
This means a trap occurred in kernel mode, and it's a trap of a kind
that the kernel isn't allowed to have/catch (bound trap) or that
is always instant death (double fault). The first number in the
bugcheck params is the number of the trap (8 = double fault, etc)
Consult an Intel x86 family manual to learn more about what these
traps are. Here is a *portion* of those codes:
    If kv shows a taskGate
use .tss on the part before the colon, then kv.
Else if kv shows a trapframe
    use .trap on that value
    Else
.trap on the appropriate frame will show where the trap was taken
(on x86, this will be the ebp that goes with the procedure KiTrap)
    Endif
kb will then show the corrected stack.
    Arguments:

    Arguments:
    Arg1: 00000000, EXCEPTION_DIVIDED_BY_ZERO
    Arg2: 00000000
    Arg3: 00000000

    Well to give an update.

I briefly read over those links above and it seems that this blue screen can be caused because of these common problems.
    * Nvidia Card Driver Problem
    * Ram Malfunction
    * Windows Pagefile problem

I have taken all of these actions with no advances at all towards solving this problem and to be honest i am about to throw it in the wall..lol..JK

As for the Nvidia drive issue, i tried reinstalling the video card drivers by booting in safe mode and i even tried an ATi Rage card which amazingly resulted in another blue screen variation regarding ati2dvaa.dll .

As for the Ram, i have ran memtest for a few hours with original ram and tried my own ram additionally.

As for the pagefile , i dont see how it could get messsed up when all of these trials have been using clean install of windows (i have tried to install using 3 different disks and 2 different Hard disks).

I am about to give up and blame the CPU/motherboard, i have literally spent way too many hours on this- pls let me know if you guys have any additional comments or suggestions ?

    Pete

After you formatted and installed XP did you then load the chipset drivers for the motherboard ?

The motherboard is pretty old (asus p4b-lx), so i assumed windows would pick up the system drivers in which it looks like it did by looking at device manger in safe mode.
Regardless, how would you install them if the system never gets around to starting ? I guess i can try installing the chipset drivers in safe mode too.

Though to be honest in all of my system that i have set up or repaired not once did i have to reapir a BSOD on a clean install.

I will try the chipset dr.

Welcome to the world - this is not altogether uncommon and it usually occurs when memory is configured incorrectly in the BIOS.

No - default drivers will be loaded - the board needs it's own specialised chipset drivers to function as designed.

Well i just downloaded the latest chipset drivers off intels web site, for the intel 845. (http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/cs-009236.htm ) .

I booted in safe mode and installed the drivers and same thing happened nothing different.

Rockster, what do u mean by incorrect Ram values ? Can u suggest certain settings in the bios tht can be incorrect ?

    Thanks
    pete

You said you flashed the BIOS but it appears that you haven't gone in afterwards and set much of anything. I say that because your system clock is Jan 1, 2000 - you can also see your timestamp errors. For starters, you can set your memory to auto or by speed, but you should be able to set your timings equivalent to what the memory manufacturer recommends. Sony used a lot of CAS2 memory but I'd need to know your machine model # or a motherboard and ideally, I'd like to know what your memory is before attempting to make any recommendations. And, sorry for the stupidity of the question but, do you even have the processor setup correctly? OK, OK , but understand why I needed to ask this.

    ;)

From my experience, it will boot to safe mode, I doubt you have installed any (much) software that will cause it to not run in normal mode so I might suspect drivers or the actual hardware.

Would any specialized drivers be required? Check in Device Manager and also go to View -> Show hidden devices. Have you removed all added hardware?

You say older motherboard, big suspicion...bad capacitors.

Yes, that board is aging a bit and has a total of 11 capacitors but I understand it was also a "tweener" - an 845i chipset with SDRam instead of RDRam. Now, I don't pretend to know Intel and I'm not about to start now however I can read and do some basic research. The BIOS is based on the v. Medallion from Award and contains a heap of various settings. Here you can adjust modes of memory and an AGP bus. You can also change a FSB frequency (100, 103, 105, 107, 109, 111, 114, 117, 120, 127, 130 and 133MHz), a CPU multiplier, a correlation of the memory and FSB frequencies (1:1 or 3:4).

As I mentioned earlier, since the system clock was still at Jan 1,2000 when amdkickass first posted, it is doubtful that he/she set anything in the BIOS after his/her flash. My first guidance would be to make sure the FSB and the multiplier are correct and then auto set the memory. I also have a sneaky suspicion that we could have a memory mismatch although there is a high probablity that the processor isn't set correctly. This is a micro ATX board with only two DIMM slots and it is about 6-7 years old. That means 128MB was considered adequate and 256MB was a dream. We still need to know whats under the hood and I'd certainly concur that the CAPS should be checked.

I don't remember if the 845 (in this case 845i) was the chipset that gave me so many problems, but I had to slipstream drivers into an XP CD a few years back to resolve a video problem on a rebuild. Major PIA.

If the CAPS are OK, my guess is that this just needs a little tweaking in the BIOS to resolve the problems at hand unless some klutz has mucked it up with an oddball stick(s) of memory.

    ;)
