Hello, I have had this problem for a while now. I have done many things to try to stop the error. The error i get is:

Random crashes with blue screen. Windows says the problem is nv4_disp.dll. The error i get is 0x00000050 (PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA). Crashes in different applications.

What I have tried so far:

-Format drive and with Windows XP w/ SP2 for OS. (40 days ago)
    -Install all of windows updates.
-Install newest nvidia driver from nvidia web site.
-Install newest graphics driver from Gigabyte web site.
-Install driver that Microsoft's crash analysis tells me to install
    -Update .inf driver for motherboard
    -Check for viruses
-Cool computer more (add intake fan and clean CPU heat sync)
    -Install nvidia beta driver 91.33

    My computer specs:
    Pentium D 820 processor
    Asus motherboard P5LD2 - Deluxe
Gigabyte graphics card with GeForce 6600 GV-NX66256DP (PCI express)
    2 GIG ram - 4 cards all PC-3200 @ 400 mhz
    PSU - Antec 400W
    2 HDD - 1-Maxtor 200GB, 1-Seagate 250GB - both SATA

    Computer Temp:
    CPU ~52C after crash
    MB ~35C after crash

I have just enabled complete dump for when my computer crashes, and will post when my computer crashes next. My computer has appoximately crashed about 40 times in the passed 40 days, including the day I re-installed windows.

    Thanks for your time.

There is actually an entire web forum on this issue:
    http://s13.invisionfree.com/nv4_disp/index.php?act=site

    What I have found works:
    Start, Run, services.msc

Look for something named similar to "NVDIA Driver Helper Service. "
    Stop this service.
Set its Startup type to Disabled.

(This service is tied to using the NVIDIA tray icon and is not needed).

    NVIDIA Display Driver Service.

I was having this exact same problem. About once or twice a month I would get the BSOD for that. I tried updating drivers but it still occurred. After reading this I went into Services and disabled that one. Hopefully this will fix that issue. I have also used Startup Control Panel to disable the non-essential NVIDIA programs from starting.

    More information:

Thanks Bill for leading me in the right direction.

OK, i disabled the "nvidia helper service" from services.msc. I have not had a crash since yesterday. I ran MemTest for 11 hours today while I went to school. It ran 17 tests and found 0 errors so far, so i think my ram is ok. I already have the WinDbg installed (same version).

    Thanks for the help.

My computer is contiuely crashing. It has crashed 3 times in the last 1 hour. I am trying to run the windows debugger, but it's not working (I don't know if i'm doing it correctly). I go: File>Open Crash Dump> Then i select Memory.dmp in the WINDOWS folder.

    Thanks for your help.

    This is what i get:

Remove all memory sticks and clean the card edge contacts. Sometimes the most mysterious problems are RAM related and these babies can get intermittent contact that is thermally dependent.

RAM testers are inconclusive at best so removing half the RAM (then alternately switch to the removed one) to test each stick is still the best test.

OK, got the debug log here now. So PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50), is that because some program (nv4_disp.dll) is trying to access memory outside of its segment? The memory nv4_disp segment was bf9e8000 to bfe30b80 and it tried to access f000e2db, which is not in it's segment. I guess the problem could also be that esi was incorrect before nv4_disp.dll made a call to memory. I still don't know what exactly is wrong, so any opinions are helpful.

    Thanks.

    Hi,

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA

The display card driver cannot have page fault. nVidia Display card refers an non-exist address and windows crashes. The reason why it refers non-exist address is either faulty ram or logic error at nVidia Display card driver. If your windows always crashes at the same instruction address within nv4_disp, it is software error. If your windows crashes with different instruction address at different windows modules, it is hardware error as hardware error occurs randomly. For your case, you have examine 5 to 6 minidumps in order to confirm whether it is hardware or software error.

ok, i've looked at mini dumps and the stack test mostly seems to be the same, but i realised that i don't always get the 0x00000050, i've recieved 2 others, but mostly get the 50. I made this list, saying what day i had a crash, how many times (the nth time for that day) then the error i got. I formatted my drive on Oct. 17 or 18. Here's this list:

    Hi,

Do you mean most of your minidumps are crashed by nVidia Display Card Driver. If yes, I believe that nVidia Display Card Driver is the culprit. Upgrade nVidia Display Card.

I have already installed 5 different versions of the nVidia drivers for the GeForce. The system has continually crashed without regaurd to what driver I have installed. So I went and removed my oldest 2 sticks of ram (i think) and I have had 2 crashes in the passed 24 hours (1/2 hour apart), and the stop messages are: 0xF4 and 0x8E, respectively. Since I have a dual-channel ram, i put them both in the yellow slots (channel A).

Before I got the 0xF4 stop message, my computer was very very slow, and my music I was playing would continually start to loop, from 1 to 3 seconds at a time, then continued playing. Eventually my computer gave me a blue screen, and wouldn't boot up, so I made sure the SATA cables were connected properly and switched the ram stick with each other. It booted up fine then, and then 20 minutes later I got the 0x8E stop message.\

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi,

Bugcheck F4 is usually related to bad paging space or disk problem of paging space (it can be fixed by chkdsk /r). Can you attach the debug report of F4 here.

Ok, i ran chkdsk. I also tried to disable Hardware acceleration and when ever I moved the bar all the way to the right, my computer would instantly crash. I tried this 3 time, and everytime the computer crashed (0x8E, then 0x50 then 0x50). I have moved the bar to the 2nd last one to the left (None), and so far have not gotten a restart. Any more suggestions? Do you think it is hardware or software related?

    Thanks for your time.

You have to attach the debug report of F4, 50 and 8E here if you want me to provide more accurate answers. The rule of thumb is hardware occurs random (ie no pattern) and software error occurs consistent (ie with regular pattern). You have to find out whether your windows crashes with pattern or not.

ok, my computer wouldn't boot up so I went and bought a new hard drive, because that could have been the problem. I just installed windows 1 hr ago and then my computer reset (I don't know which error I got because it didn't give me a blue screen because the option in control panel was set to just restart). I have that win debug program on my computer but it will not work correctly. I open the program up, select my mini dump, and then press generate log. No cmd window opens up and no file is put in C:. I will switch my ram and try to access my old hard drive.

    Thanks.

Got the debugger to work. Looks like my old hard drive is toast, becuase I can't even access it when I plug it into my computer (I can see the drive, but it is very slow showing the properties). My computer is still crashing and i've tried both sets of ram now.

here is the 8E debug log:

    KERNEL_MODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED_M (1000008e)
This is a very common bugcheck. Usually the exception address pinpoints
the driver/function that caused the problem. Always note this address
as well as the link date of the driver/image that contains this address.
Some common problems are exception code 0x80000003. This means a hard
coded breakpoint or assertion was hit, but this system was booted
/NODEBUG. This is not supposed to happen as developers should never have
hardcoded breakpoints in retail code, but ...
If this happens, make sure a debugger gets connected, and the
system is booted /DEBUG. This will let us see why this breakpoint is
    happening.

Here is a 0x50 debug log. I looked at the two I have, and they are exactly the same. Here it is:

    PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA (50)
Invalid system memory was referenced. This cannot be protected by try-except,
it must be protected by a Probe. Typically the address is just plain bad or it
    is pointing at freed memory.
    Arguments:
    Arg1: f000e2db, memory referenced.
    Arg2: 00000000, value 0 = read operation, 1 = write operation.
Arg3: bf9f320f, If non-zero, the instruction address which referenced the bad memory
    address.
    Arg4: 00000000, (reserved)

    Hi,

According the stack trace of the last 2 debug reports, I believe that the culprit is ram(80%) or video card (20%). Your windows is crashed with different symptoms and it is sign of hardware error. Maybe your memory slot is bad. Maybe the BIOS memory setting is invalid.
