Have a IBM ThinkPad that refuses to start up. When I power the unit on it tries to start up, but immediately shuts down without anything appearing on the screen. Any thoughts

    Motherboard???

    Hello Bmartin,

first of all, is your Thinkpad plugged in or running on battery. Maybe your battery is empty. I have to ask the question. Otherwise, I suggest you to remove every device, from the CDrom, to all PCMCIA cards, battery, etc...
Then, plug in the laptop and retry a start up. Test the powersupply with a multimeter or try another one (in a computer shop maybe...Some techies are cool).
If you have the same result, it could be a motherboard issue.
Be sure to remove everything, even the hard drive.
I use to repair several laptops and my suggestion is inspired from Dell or Toshiba diagnose process.
    Let us know...

    Hello;

I did anything suggested with no positive results. When I power the LT on all normal lights come on, but nothing there are no beeps and nothing appears on the screen. There is no hard drive activity. The power lights stay on and I can hear the fan, but that is it. Is there an internal battery that may be dead that may be stopping the booth up?

    Hi there,

If you can plug a monitor into the Laptop.

I'd also try starting it up with the hard disk removed.

    Cheers

Thanks. I tried the separate monitor and had already tried a start up with the hard drive removed. It would appear to be a motherboard issue. Oh well. maybe I can find a cheap replacement to try.

It seems to be the mobo...

    Hello there,
yeah your Motherboard seems to be dead...
Not easy to replace, btw. Let us know if you need help, when you will find a new one (then I could look for a technical manual to help dismounting your LT).
I didn't even think it could be a screen issue. Nice one Acab23. Sometimes, it needs 2 brains:)

I'm probably too late, but I had this problem on a Dell. I simply removed the RAM sticks and snapped them back in. It worked.. Not sure why but it did the trick...
