    In my old cable system i was using my Linksys "BESFR41" router and had to clone my cable IP configuration and it worked great.

    Having finally gotten both of my OSes working with this new DSL PPoE connection.....Well, i'm a little shakie about doing this re-config thing. I guess the main question is,.......is this a big thing ??

    And another thing, does this dsl connection need a firewallOR just install Zonealarm later after the configing is out of the way?

    Thanks
    K

    From RFC2516 - A Method for Transmitting PPP Over Ethernet (PPPoE)
    Based on that, I see no reason that a firewall wouldn't be as necessary as with other connection methods. They may or may not be protecting you to some (unspecified) extent from (unspecified) threats by some (unspecified) method. Mostly though, they will be protecting themselves.

    I'm a little confused though. Are you still using the LinkSys router or does it not like PPPoE? If so, are you still running multiple PCs connecting to the ISP and if yes, how?

    I'm now configured to (1) multi-boot PC ONLY thru Bell DSL ethernet modem and thats all. Running "Win2000 and XP Pro "..

    My router is waiting for more comments about it's configuration??

    No firewall yet and totally confused about needing one.

    Thanks

    Linksys folks just got back to me and said:

    Once in the set-up page, go down to "PPPoE" at the bottom of the page. Click "Enable" and enter your Bell South Username and Password into the appropriate slots. Click on the "Apply" button and you are ready to go!

    So, i'm going to give it a go......back later-----I hope:)

    Guess what "ME" the dummie did...?????:(

    For PPPoE dsl connection, it ask for my account and password...ok. Well, I did that 40 times and it never worked, but thru reading and reading more, I found out that I had to put in the whole thing as a account ex:

    Not = yadayada
    but = yadayada@att.net

    I just never figured the End part " @att.net" was of any value but it sure as H*** did......LOL.

    Everything is up and running now.....and Again, thanks to all.

    Almost forgot, I decided to use Zonealarm pro thru the router since there's a option there.

    One Thing I didn't Mention that happened along the way while trying to reconfig my Linksys router:
    It wouldn't save my password OR go back to defaults using it's menu..... so I contacted Linksys and there trick worked and thought it might help someone else and some frustrations.

    "Kindly do a hard reset on your router. In doing this you need a pointed object to hold the reset button all through out the procedure. Before doing the hard reset, disconnect all the devices that is connected to your router and have a copy of the settings that you have applied in your router. "

    1. Press and hold the reset button.

    2. Wait for about 30 seconds and then unplug the power adapter.

    3. Wait for another 5 seconds and then replug the adapter.

    4. Wait for the DIAG light to turn on and then off before releasing the button.

    5. Put your network back togethen and then test it if it will work.

    The router should now be restored to factory default settings and then apply all the settings that you have previously in your router. Apply the settings that you need in PPPoE.

    Keep me posted with the result and have a nice day! "

    Later
