Next April 2007, I been doing Personal Computers for 20 years and been doing simple web sites for fun since about Day 1 of the internet.

Yesterday and today, I believe, I witnessed one the most phenomenal things I've ever witnessed in that 20 years.

By long distance telephone, I’ve been helping a high school buddy who understands the basics of a computer but, like most folks been struggle along using the software that came with the computer.

With his recent retirement and extra time, I been trying to move him into the good software.

Of Course one of those was Firefox which we installed awhile back However, he is having trouble being weaned from Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

Therefore last night he was using IE and I was using my normal SeaMonkey. ( I too am having weaning problems because I prefer the suite arrangement with a browser)

I was having him go to http://www.winamp.com to download what I consider the best software on the market for music, i.e. mp3, wav files etc.

WinAmp also does Video and lots more but, for music they really nailed it with the version which first appeared last October, 2005.

As we did this together with me using SeaMonkey and him using IE so I could follow along telling him what to do, We arrived at the WinAmp website and at the download screen I was explaining to him that for now let's get the FREE version and then once he was satisfied I wasn't wasting his money we could come back and get the Pro version which cost $19.95 and he said NO! - $29.95

    I said, "Are you blind" it's $19.95 - He said, "I'm not blind and it's $29.95 "

Well, after several page refresh and back and forth with lots of cuss words and no change in the results it finally come to my mind that not all browsers display things the same so, I told him to get out of that junk software he was using and load Firefox.

I myself dumped SeaMonkey and loaded Firefox to get us using the exact same browser.

Images, animations and other stuff not being the same doesn’t bother me but, seeing the price be different kind of bewildered me.

We then both went back to the WinAmp web site and had the same price of $19.95 so, we stopped hollering at each other, downloaded the Free version and installed it on his computer.

Today, I decided to explore this phenomenal a little further and loaded up IE and about fell out of my chair when I saw the price of $24.95

I next loaded Firefox and was shocked to see it also showed $24.95 - At that point I thought well maybe they had a price increase overnight.

But, then I loaded up SeaMonkey, Mozilla and Netscape and all three of them still showed $19.95

Folks, I may be 72 and senile but, I quit drinking a bunch of years ago.

I next dumped the cache of all browsers and even rebooted the computer to make sure I wasn't going mad or missing something.

Same results, IE and Firefox show the Pro version at $24.95 while SeaMonkey, Mozilla, and Netscape 7.02 show $19.95

AND, I don't understand what happened to the $29.95 we had last night using IE.

I don't know what's going on period. I think I will ask WinAmp and see if they did change the price overnight or if they have an answer.

I might add that I did purchase WinAmp Pro in November, 2005 and paid the price of $19.95

I shall await to hear from Ramona And Westside as I'm sure they will take a look.

    Meanwhile I’m confused -- Ray

I don't know what Winamp is doing, but both Ramona and I got the Pro version.
I have had it for years, and loved, but with the v.5.32 I started running into problems which I did not have with v.5.24. Ramona has not been able to burn any CDs, while I could with v.5.24, I can't with v.5.32 (actually, I get 3-19 sec. samples of each song). I reinstalled 5.24 on top of 5.32, and I am back to normal. I contact their support last Saturday, but got no reply. There is a link for previous Winamp Pro owner, which I clicked on. Going to price displayed, at http://winamp.com/player/ I see $34.95, using Firefox2.0. And $24.95 usin IE7.
And $19.95 with Seamonkey1.0.6, as well as K-Ninja2.0.4 (a relative of K-Meleon). Now, how about that?

    Firefox 2.0, SeaMonkey 1.0.6, Netscape 7.2, Mozilla 1.7.13, IE 5.50 SP1,
and Opera 9.0.1 all show the correct price of WinAmp Pro - $19.95...

    Ramona,
may be it depends on the OS.
I have a cataract in my left eye, so I am very careful in reading those numbers. FF1.5.0.8 has, also, $34.95.
I am so sorry in having dragged you, Ramona, into this. And, I can't even post because it tells me that my e-mail address is not valid, although it is acceptable for the registration. I am giving up on Winamp, but not before I sent an e-mail to the webmaster.

I'm sorry to be coming late to the party, but I show a price of $34.95 for Winamp Pro 5.31 no matter which browser I use, FF 2.0 or IE7.

Were the prices updated overnight, due to Westside's email? If so, good show. :)

(FWIW, I don't use Winamp, and wouldn't pay for the Pro version in any event.)

    Jim,

I was referring to the way the price was viewed on my PC, not whether or not WinAmp is compatible with Win98SE.

I am using IE6 and seeing a price of $9.95

Sounds like database problems on Winamps part and not the OS or Browser used.

I was kidding when I said that it was OS-dependant. The fact remains that we have been seeing some utterly ridiculous things. In FF2.0 I see (I copied from the web page) $34.95

Viewing source with IE6 and Opera 9.02 both show $19.95. The page shows $24.95 (IE6) and $19.95 (Opera). The shopping carts shows what the page shows, two different costs dependant on browser. When opening the page with IE Panda alerted to the Atwola tracking cookie.

That's interesting ... using FF 2.0 with XP Pro, this page shows $34.95 as the price but, using IE7, the same page shows $19.95. Source code viewed with either browser shows $19.95.

What's really funny is that when the checkout page is viewed with FF 2.0, it shows $34.95 (as does its source code). The very same page viewed with IE7 shows both $34.95 and $19.95 (see screenshot), as does the source code.

At least WinAmp is aware of the anomaly and working on the page...

The fact that Nullsoft, the company which produces Winamp, is owned by AOHell, and that all the original development team has left the building (along with Elvis), is enough to make me stay away from it.

Are they aware? I sent them a number of e-mails, none confirmed. And, can't communicate with anyone, including posting at the newsgroup.
I have had Winamp Pro forever, but I am afraid that the ownership is finally showing up. Too bad, because I don't like any of the other music programs.

I purchased WinAmp Pro Version 5.111 last October when they came out with this new version after the major overhaul of WinAmp and as I've said, I thought they nailed it with that version.

Following October, They had a new version 5.2. in February and at the time I had my windows 98 hard drive inserted so I installed 5.2. on the Win-98 hard drive and low and behold it wouldn't even run and I just figured it was upgraded to the point that it no longer ran on Win-98.

So, I removed 5.2. and went back to the 5.111 version and have had no problems at all with 5.111 and have not bothered to update to any of the other versions.

Since I been running my Win-XP Hard Drive lately I was about to update to WinAmp version 5.3.2 when West Side posted the problem he has been having with WinAmp so I decided to stick with 5.111 - Thanks WestSide.

Regarding the WinAmp Web Site and the price differences, I have continued to monitor the web site nearly every day and it has continued to give me $24.95 with IE and FF and the other browsers continued to show $19.95.

This morning at 3:15 AM Sat Dec 9th I checked and all my browsers now show $19.95 so I am assumming WinAmp got the word and fixed it.

Too bad WinAmp doesn't respond back to their customers because I too left word with them and heard back nothing.

Folks, the world is changing and I fear it is is not for the better.

I failed to provided my browser versions with the original posting as I should have so, for the record they are as follows:... IE 6.0.2 - FF 1.5.0.7 - Mozilla 1.7.12 - SeaMonkey 1.05 and Netscape 7.02

I was very surprised at so many posting relative to this subject and was amazed at the number and range of price differences others were getting.

Thanks to all for their participations. I think I shall keep a check on WinAmp off and on for a spell to verify it is fixed. -- Ray
