First of all, I'm not sure if this if the proper thread to post to, since it involves an unknown device driver. If it's the wrong thread, my apologies.

I've had this problem off and on, for almost a year. It can be very unpredictable and sporadic. I've sent in many error reports to MS with no luck in identifying the specific device driver that is causing Windows to shut down.

I have a feeling it might be my HP 1310 printer. And I just bought a new computer, a Compaq Presario, that I will be setting up this Sunday. It doesn't come with a printer, so I will be using my HP printer with the new computer. I have Windows XP Home now, but my new computer comes with XP Media Center Edition.

My question is, should I put my printer software on the new computer, if it might be the cause of a Windows stop error on my old computer? If my printer is the culprit, is there a way I can diagnose that and make sure it doesn't cause problems with my new computer?

    Thanks for any help.

Your best approach is to download the latest drivers from HP for you printer and install those - start here

You may be able to get some information on the stop error by looking in Event Viewer - Right click > My Computer > Manage > Event Viewer - look under System and Application.

To expand an event double click on it - to copy the report click on the icon below the up/down arrows to copy to clipboard and paste in a post here if appropriate.

Thank you for your reply. A friend who knows more about computers than I do checked the Event Viewer, but didn't find any relevant info to the device driver problem. My old computer is gone now, and I have my new one, an HP Compaq, set up. I connected my printer to it, and then did an update from HP for it, and haven't had any problems with it. So hopefully that means the culprit driver wasn't for my printer, and the old problem is banished with my old computer. Thanks for your help.
