    I have Win ME.
I am trying to connect a Verbatim "Store'N'Go" Flash Drive via USB.
It is supposed to be recognized immediately as a new drive. It is not recognized, although I get messages that is operating correctly.

I tried ADD Hardware. Messages say a number of files are missing. I locate all but one in my computer (Windows\System\Options\Install) and copy to Windows\System.
    The missing file is Windows\SystemVMM32.VXD(NTKERN.VXD)

Where can this file be found?

Are you getting the error when you install the software on the CD that came with (or should have come with) the flash drive?

The vmm32.vxd file is in the C:\Windows\System folder. It's a hidden file so make sure "Hidden files and folders" is checked in My Computer (or any folder)>Folder Options>View tab. The ntkern.vxd is a part of the vmm32.vxd file.

There was no CD, supposedly not needed. Used "Add Hardware ". Message said device was working properly, no driver needed and the best driver was used. Device Manager had a small green "?" on the USB storage item.

When Driver Details was clicked, it said "VMM32.VXD(NTKERN.VXD) was not available ". I had already found VMM32.VXD and copied to Windows\System
    (and into Windows\System\VMM32 folder).

Here is the repair procedure :

Although early reports of this problem were associated with the OSR2.1 USB Support files, the error message is triggered by the loading of a UMAX device driver, "umaxis11.386 ". This driver is loaded by a line in the system.ini file (386Enh section). The error will not occur if this device line is removed, however the device driver is required when using scanners with UMAX UDS-IS11/ISA SCSI card.

To Install the Updated UMAXIS11.386 File:

    1. Download to a temporary location on your disk drive the new version of this file (Modified date April 17 1998, size 19,747 bytes). [If you have problems downloading this file, RIGHT-click on the link and choose "Save As..."]

    2. Reboot your PC in Safe Mode (press F8 when "Starting Windows..." appears, select the Safe Mode option).

    3. Copy the new file "umaxis11.386" to your Windows directory (usually c:\windows). Allow the older version of the driver to be overwritten.

You can download the file at driverguide.
You will have to create a "free account " to download :

This claims to fix it as well:

Funny how of most of the issues with these file seem to relate but to a Umzx scanner.
